Our client, a leading privately held infrastructure and transportation services company supporting port, terminal, and logistics operations across the U.S., is seeking an experienced attorney to support maritime and cross-border operations, with a primary focus on Canadian and Mexican legal frameworks. This interim role will partner closely with commercial, operations, and risk teams to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice across shipping, port activity, and multimodal transport.
Responsibilities
- Advise on compliance with international maritime conventions and regulatory regimes, as well as applicable Canadian and Mexican laws
- Interpret and manage port regulations, customs requirements, and other logistics-related regulatory frameworks affecting cross-border operations
- Draft, review, and negotiate a range of commercial agreements, including shipping contracts (charterparties, bills of lading), affreightment agreements, and related logistics arrangements
- Support vessel transactions, registrations, and related documentation as needed
- Provide strategic counsel on cargo claims, demurrage issues, and general supply chain disputes
- Manage and resolve disputes, including coordinating external counsel in litigation, arbitration, and admiralty proceedings
- Support regulatory investigations
- Support insurance-related matters, including P&I claims
- Provide legal guidance during operational disruptions or crisis scenarios (e.g., port issues, security incidents), including coordination with regulators and stakeholders
- Counsel internal teams on emerging issues impacting maritime and logistics operations, including cybersecurity and evolving regulatory risks
Qualifications
- J.D. (or equivalent)
- U.S. residency and active license to practice law in the U.S.
- 7+ years of experience in maritime, admiralty, and/or international trade law
- Experience with Canadian and/or Mexican maritime, port, or customs frameworks
- Experience advising logistics, shipping, or transportation companies is a plus
- Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills
- Ability to manage cross-border legal issues and coordinate with local counsel
- Practical, business-minded approach with strong communication skills
