Role and Responsibilities
Serve as the primary legal advisor on any matters affecting the organization
Provide timely and accurate legal advice to a variety of legal topics such as contract law, maritime law, employment law & etc.
Oversee the drafting, reviewing, and negotiation of contracts with clients, vendors, partners, and other relevant parties to ensure the organization’s interests are protected
Manage and maintain records of all contracts, agreements, and other legal & administrative documents
Manage any litigation and disputes involving the organization, including selecting, appointing, and working with external legal counsel to resolve issues in a manner that protects the company’s interests
Monitor and stay updated on regulatory change and ensure compliance across the organization with all applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines by implementing necessary internal controls and procedures
Report and initiate the immediate corrective actions as described in the guidelines when non-compliance and/or concern is found
Promote ethical business practices and corporate governance standards within the organization which includes managing the process for ethical compliance and implementing programs that ensure the organization’s adherence to laws, regulatory requirements, and internal policies
Manage the organization’s claims process including communication with the insurers, insured and other relevant parties, and negotiate settlements for and on behalf of the ship owners of the fleet managed by the company when required
Identify and evaluate legal risks and opportunities within the business strategy and operations, and propose appropriate actions to mitigate risk and leverage opportunities
Liaise with external regulatory bodies and stakeholders on compliance issues and investigations which includes preparing and presenting reports to regulatory agencies and board members
Execute and manage the tasks as required under Company Act and/or its related laws and acts
Oversee and guide marine claim administrators to ensure effective claims management consistently and efficiently within the team through setting clear objectives and best practices, providing direction, monitoring performance, and ensuring compliance with established processes and timelines.
Serve as an escalation point for complex claims and mentor team members to enhance their skills and professional development
Perform other duties as required
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree, Post Graduate Diploma or Professional Degree in Law or equivalent
Minimum five years of relevant experience either in private practice or as in-house counsel.
Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style
Analytical and a problem solver
Periodic overtime to meet deadlines or accommodate time zone differences
Will be required to be available via mobile device outside of office hours
