Litigation & Trial Practice / Food & Beverage Jobs in Washington, DC at Medicus

If you are interested in this position, please also provide the following (sent to [email protected]):

A writing sample. It can be in the form of a short paper, a cover letter, or even an email.
Confirmation that you are comfortable with GIANT dogs.
Confirmation that you would be able to work (and reliably get to) Lake Oswego. Please note that there are no nearby bus stops or other transportation.

This flexible, casual, part-time (10-30 hours per week) position is in a home-based law firm. No evenings or weekends. You can change your schedule as needed to accommodate your activities with some notice (usually about a week). This would be an excellent position for a parent who is looking to work during school hours or someone who already has a part-time job. We are willing to train quick learners!

The major portion of the job will ultimately include (easiest to hardest): scanning, filing, file maintenance, making some phone calls, drafting letters (usually from forms), filling out legal forms, proofreading, preparing status reports, researching, and drafting portions of legal documents. You may be asked to help with personal projects (e.g., making reservations, organizing, phone calls). You may be asked to help with the dogs.

A GOOD candidate would be able to scan, file, draft letters, and handle miscellaneous projects. You must have excellent oral and written communication skills. You must be detail-oriented and be very comfortable with MS Windows and MS Word. Depending on your skills and/or willingness to learn, additional duties may be possible. I am willing to train the right applicant and, ultimately, you may be performing as a paralegal. A GREAT candidate would have experience in the legal field (as a legal assistant or paralegal). An IDEAL would have significant recent experience with patents (e.g., patent searching and/or patent drafting).

The most recent person in this position described her job as follows:

Draft and review legal documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
Conduct legal research to support patent preparation.
Manage case files, organize documentation, and maintain confidentiality.
Provide general administrative duties, improving office efficiency.

We have GIANT, not-so-well-behaved, pushy, drooly, smelly, dogs. One takes a while to get used to new people, but ultimately is very friendly. You may be asked to help with the dogs, so the ideal candidate must be VERY comfortable with dogs.

The starting pay is $18 per hour (if you have significant recent legal experience your start pay would be $20, and if you have significant recent patent experience your start pay would be $22) until you know my systems. You will receive at least a $1-$3 raise when you are familiar with my systems (usually 3-4 months). An additional raise and/or bonus will be given on your one-year anniversary. That being said, parking is free, sweats and jeans are appropriate, and you can almost set your own hours (during the week and no evenings). You may be working in the storage/file room that has good lighting, but no windows.

You would be required to have a background check and sign a confidentiality agreement. You would be working through a temporary agency. Although there is some provision for medical insurance through the temporary agency, it is unlikely that you would be working enough hours for medical insurance.
