Litigation/Discovery Paralegal Jobs in San Diego, CA at Burton Kelley, LLP
Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented, multi-jurisdictional Litigation Paralegal with strong, hands-on discovery experience to join our civil litigation firm. This is a discovery-focused role: the ideal candidate is highly experienced in drafting and responding to written discovery, organizing and reviewing case files and productions, preparing discovery plans, and assisting attorneys with subpoenas and all phases of discovery. The right candidate possesses exceptional organizational and communication skills, a pleasant attitude, and a strong work ethic, and has the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, to multi-task, and to stay resourceful under deadline. A solid command of California civil procedure and discovery practice is essential. This paralegal will play a central role in managing the discovery life cycle across the firm’s cases—from initial planning through document production and deposition support—and will serve as backup for calendaring, filing, and service.
Duties
· Draft, propound, and respond to written discovery—including interrogatories, requests for production, and requests for admission—and prepare objections, meet-and-confer correspondence, and verifications.
· Prepare and maintain discovery plans, tracking discovery deadlines, outstanding items, and strategy across the firm’s cases.
· Organize, review, and analyze documents received in discovery; prepare documents for production and depositions; and build and maintain production sets and privilege logs.
· Assist attorneys with subpoenas and all phases of discovery, including preparing, serving, and tracking deposition notices, subpoenas, and third-party document requests.
· Assist attorneys in the preparation of legal documents, including pleadings, motions, and discovery-related filings.
· Perform legal research related to case law, statutes, and regulations pertinent to ongoing cases and discovery disputes.
· Communicate with counsel, vendors, witnesses, experts, and the court on discovery and case matters.
· Assist in trial preparation by organizing exhibits and preparing trial binders, witness lists, and jury instructions.
· Serve as backup for calendaring court, litigation, and discovery deadlines; e-filing in state and federal courts throughout California; and service of documents—providing coverage as needed.
Requirements
· Paralegal certificate or equivalent relevant experience.
· Bachelor’s degree preferred.
· Demonstrated, hands-on experience drafting and responding to written discovery, preparing discovery plans, and managing document review and production.
· Experience assisting attorneys with subpoenas, deposition notices, and third-party discovery.
· Strong command of California civil procedure—including discovery rules, deadlines, and pleading and discovery formats—in both state and federal court.
· Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines simultaneously.
· Proficient in MS Word, Office, Excel, e-filing systems, and Outlook; experience with document-review/e-discovery platforms a plus.
· Strong time management, prioritization, and communication skills.
· Reliable and dependable.
