Position Summary:

The Legal Assistant position for the Prosecutors Office supports prosecuting attorneys in all facets of case management including, but not limited to, assembling and organizing information for legal documents, researching law, assembling case materials, writing reports and memoranda, collaborating with law enforcement and other agencies, coordinating and maintaining witness relations, and preparing and distributing discovery materials in cases. Additionally, the Legal Assistant is expected to assist prosecuting attorneys by performing various administrative and clerical tasks as needed.

Essential Job Functions:

Case management of all cases filed by the Prosecutors Office under direct supervision of the assigned prosecuting attorney.
Maintain confidentiality of all case sensitive information.
Perform research, study various legal records and participate in various training sessions to gather relevant information.
Maintain knowledge of current and relevant legal literature associated with cases.
Coordinate with attorneys to develop case strategies, maintain good working relationships with public defenders, and assist in the preparation of cases for court hearings and trial.
Document creation: Prepare legal drafts by assembling and organizing information for legal forms and documents, including complaints, declarations, discovery requests, responses, and other pleadings.
Research and record background information and factual statements.
Maintain working knowledge of case filings such as complaints and other pleadings, as well as law enforcement and/or other agency reports.
Assemble case materials by collecting, organizing, and summarizing information, documents, reports, and evidence.
Assist the prosecuting attorney in preparation for trial, i.e. preparing trial briefs, exhibits, subpoenas, evidence, and motions.
Attend court sessions in order to listen to and record critical information.
Maintain calendar by entering and updating requirements, court dates, and meetings.
Attend staff or other meetings as requested.
Confer regularly with prosecuting attorneys and provide assistance on their duties.
Update job knowledge by participating in continuing educational opportunities; reading legal publications.
Maintaining professional networks.
Participate in educational opportunities to establish and maintain Tribal cultural awareness.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Must have a valid drivers license and be able to meet the minimum insurance requirements of the Quapaw Nations Motor Vehicle Policy.

Education/ Experience:

Required: Must have High school diploma or equivalent. Must have one (1) year of experience with an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities in a related field.

Preferred: Two (2) years of professional experience in prosecutorial office work or Paralegal Certification.

Physical Abilities: Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time, as well as regular reach above the shoulders; must be able to push, pull and lift up to and including 50 pounds without experiencing physical discomfort or pain. Must be able to travel occasionally for business purposes, attendance of seminars, lectures, etc.

Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office environment with no disagreeable conditions. Occasional in state and out of state travel may be required.
