About the firm

O’Brien Criminal and Civil Solicitors is a fast-paced law firm based in Sydney CBD. Our office is looking for a Civil and Criminal Law Paralegal / Clerk to Principal. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a keen eye for detail and a passion for Civil and Criminal Law. The person will also need to have an ability to work autonomously and proactively around the practice.

About the role

As the Principal’s Clerk, you will be directly assisting the Principal Solicitor with case management. Your role in assisting the Principal Solicitor is pivotal in progressing matters and maintaining the firm’s strong reputation. You gain great exposure to tasks that will greatly benefit a paralegal in their future career.

Responsibilities

  • Drafting routine correspondence and other court documents, reviewing and editing letters and documents.
  • Responding to emails, liaising with various stakeholders, including clients
  • Basic file management (opening files, filing paperwork, etc)
  • Sending cost agreements and issuing invoices for matters.
  • Creating briefs for solicitors and counsel.
  • Assist the principal and practice manager with monthly practice statistics.
  • Attending to requests from the civil and criminal solicitors relating to active matters.
  • Conduct legal research at the request of the principal and senior solicitors.
  • Prepare files ahead of conferences and court commitments including brief creation, indexing and observations.
  • Assist the principal with daily scheduling of conference, court commitments and other various tasks.
  • Ad-Hoc duties as requested by principal solicitor and practice manager.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated paralegal experience.
  • Strong written skills in drafting legal documentation and other correspondence.
  • Client service oriented, with proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Well refined organisational skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Good understanding of pre-court and court processes.
  • General computer skills including the use of MS Office products and Google Workspace documents.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and show great commitment.
  • Ability to multi-task whilst meeting tight deadlines within a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable to work under pressure.
  • Proven ability to proactively manage own workload and guide the workload of others.
  • Legal or administration studies are highly desirable but not essential for success.
