The Paralegal is responsible for providing legal support and assistance to immigrants and refugees of all backgrounds, including those who entered the U.S. seeking immigration relief and asylum in St. Louis. The primary function of this role is to collaborate and coordinate with attorneys, clients, and community organizations to ensure that individuals receive competent legal representation and access to necessary legal resources and remedies.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in related discipline;
Prior experience working in immigration law is required;
Experience conducting legal research and drafting legal documents required
Experience filing family based, employment based and humanitarian based immigration applications is preferred;
Bilingual abilities are a plus.
Essential Responsibilities:
Assists attorney in managing clients and caseloads.
Organizing and maintaining case files and databases;
Maintaining accurate records of case activities, deadlines, and court appearances;
Ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of client information;
Assisting attorney with client intake interviews, gathering relevant information, and assessing eligibility for service;
Ensuring the timely submission of applications, filings, and responses to inquiries;
Preparing clients for interviews, hearings, and court appearances by providing guidance and necessary documentation;
Providing compassionate and culturally sensitive support to clients throughout the legal process, addressing their questions and concerns;
Coordinating and scheduling meetings, hearings, and appointments with clients, attorneys, and immigration officials;
Conducting research to stay current on immigration laws, regulations, and precedents relevant to International Institute clients.
Under the supervision of an attorney, prepares, drafts, and maintains accurate and up-to-date legal documents, immigration applications and correspondence.
Preparing and submitting applications to the US government for Family Reunification, Family Based immigration, Temporary Protected Status, Adjustment of Status, Employment Authorization, Asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, Waivers of Inadmissibility, VAWA, Employment based immigration, and humanitarian relief;
Assisting immigrants with applications for additional benefits such as employment authorization documents, travel documents, renewal of permanent resident cards, Certificates of Citizenship, and FOIAs;
Preparing and maintaining general legal documents, including immigration forms, applications, affidavits, and supporting evidence;
Preparing immigration forms, motions, and supporting documents for submission to various US government agencies;
Contacting USCIS on behalf of clients;
Researching and drafting legal correspondence, including client letters, petitions, motions, and legal briefs.
Performing other assigned duties as necessary for the successful operation of the organization.

Experience with Legal / Immigration Software a plus;

Ability to be administratively self-supportive and take independent initiative to accomplish objectives;
Ability to effectively plan work activities, schedules, priorities and utilization of resources;
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a member of various teams and committees;
