The New York City Civil Court, in collaboration with the New York State Unified Court System, is offering a one-year Legal Fellowship for recent law school graduates with a passion for public service and access to justice. This prestigious program provides Fellows with hands-on experience in one of the most active divisions of the NYC court system—Housing Court.
Role & Responsibilities:
Conduct legal research and analysis of various aspects of landlord/tenant law, including, for example, the Rent Stabilization Law, the newly enacted “good cause” eviction clause statute, the Housing Maintenance Code, regulations concerning subsidized housing, and the law governing cooperative housing, as well as other fields of law that impact landlord/tenant litigation.
Gain invaluable exposure to trial practice, judicial decision-making, and procedural fairness.
Rotate among judges to observe various adjudication styles and case types.
Draft bench memoranda, legal opinions, proposed orders, and correspondence
Utilize Housing Court technologies, including e-filing systems, case tracking tools, and digital databases.
Professional Development:
Fellows will attend professional development forums hosted by the NYC Civil Court, providing opportunities to engage with judges and legal professionals committed to public interest law.
Qualifications:
Receipt of a Juris Doctor degree from a fully accredited law school. Applicants must have graduated no more than 3 years prior to the date of appointment.
Duration: 1-Year Fellowship (Renewable for 1 additional year)
