Globe 24-7, in partnership with a leading mining company, is seeking an experienced Legal Director (local) to join its team in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This is an exciting opportunity for a commercially focused legal professional to support a complex mining operation, providing strategic legal advice across major transactions, commercial contracts and operational matters. The successful candidate will play a key role in protecting the Company’s commercial interests while supporting the business through continued growth and expansion
The Role
The Legal Director will lead the Company’s legal function within the DRC, providing commercially focused legal support across all aspects of the business.
This role will have primary responsibility for mergers and acquisitions, complex commercial agreements, litigation management and legal support to the Company’s mining operations. The successful candidate will work closely with internal stakeholders and external legal advisors to structure, negotiate and execute strategic transactions while ensuring legal risks are effectively identified and managed.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring a strong commercial lawyer with extensive experience operating within the mining sector and managing high-value, complex legal matters.
The Responsibilities
- Provide strategic legal support across the Company’s commercial and operational activities.
- Lead all legal aspects of mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and other strategic corporate transactions.
- Structure, draft, review and negotiate large, complex commercial agreements.
- Provide legal support across mining operations, procurement, construction, engineering, logistics and commercial activities.
- Advise on contract strategy, contract negotiations and contractual risk allocation.
- Lead legal due diligence for acquisitions, investments and strategic transactions.
- Manage significant commercial disputes and oversee litigation matters.
- Instruct and manage external legal counsel within the DRC and internationally.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with international law firms.
- Provide commercially pragmatic legal advice that supports business objectives while managing legal risk.
- Advise on matters relating to OHADA legislation and the legal framework governing commercial activities within the DRC.
- Monitor changes in relevant legislation and assess their impact on the business.
- Support the negotiation and execution of strategic commercial partnerships and investment opportunities.
The Requirements
- Congolese nationality is essential.
- Professional fluency in English and French.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB or equivalent).
- Qualified legal practitioner admitted within the DRC.
- Minimum of 20 years’ post-qualification legal experience.
- Extensive legal experience within the mining, natural resources or extractive industries.
- Demonstrated experience leading complex mergers and acquisitions.
- Strong expertise negotiating large-scale commercial contracts and strategic agreements.
- Experience supporting operational mining businesses from a commercial legal perspective.
- Strong understanding of commercial law, contract law and corporate transactions.
- Working knowledge of OHADA legislation and its application within the DRC.
- Experience managing significant litigation and dispute resolution processes.
- Proven experience working with leading international law firms.
- Excellent commercial judgement with the ability to balance legal risk and business objectives.
