Cana Consulting is partnering with an established international organisation within the shipping and maritime sector is looking to appoint an experienced Legal Counsel to join its Singapore-based legal team.

The successful candidate will work closely with commercial and operational stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions, providing practical and timely legal advice on a broad range of shipping, maritime and general commercial matters.

The position would particularly suit an experienced shipping lawyer who enjoys being closely embedded with the business and advising commercial teams on live contractual and operational issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide real-time legal advice and support to commercial and operational teams across the organisation’s international offices.
  • Draft, review, negotiate and advise on a broad range of English law shipping and commercial contracts.
  • Advise on shipping arrangements including charterparties, contracts of affreightment, vessel sharing arrangements, slot charters, service agreements and bills of lading.
  • Work closely with commercial stakeholders on contractual negotiations, interpretation of contractual provisions and the management of legal and commercial risk.
  • Develop practical legal guidelines and materials to assist commercial teams in understanding commonly encountered contractual provisions and risks.
  • Independently manage shipping claims and disputes, including working with insurers, P&I clubs and external counsel where appropriate.
  • Advise on contractual and operational issues arising during the performance of shipping contracts.
  • Monitor relevant legal and regulatory developments and provide appropriate training and legal updates to commercial stakeholders.
  • Support the Head of Legal and wider business on other commercial and corporate legal matters as required.

Requirements

  • Qualified lawyer in Singapore and/or England & Wales, ideally >12PQE
  • Strong background in shipping and maritime law
  • Strong working knowledge of charterparties and commercial shipping contracts; experience with contracts of affreightment would be particularly advantageous.
  • Comfortable advising on both contentious and non-contentious shipping matters, including claims and contractual disputes.
  • Strong drafting, contractual interpretation and negotiation skills.
  • Commercially minded and able to translate complex legal and contractual issues into clear, practical advice for business stakeholders.
  • Able to operate independently and provide timely advice in a fast-moving international commercial environment.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
