The Company
Our client is an international financial institution with a strong heritage in global markets, commodities, and emerging economies. Operating across major financial hubs including London, New York, Shanghai, and Singapore, the organisation supports a broad global client base through its expertise in traded products such as commodities, fixed income, currencies, and structured solutions.
The Singapore office plays a strategic role in supporting the firm’s growth across Asia. The legal team is lean, and the role reports into a senior APAC counsel in Singapore.
Responsibilities
The Legal Counsel will provide legal support to the Asia business, with a particular focus on the global markets and financing businesses. Key responsibilities include:
- Review and negotiate Asia‑focused trading, derivatives, and securities documentation.
- Support the business on regional commercial and regulatory requirements.
- Liaise with the London legal team on ISDA‑related matters (documentation handled primarily in London).
- Work closely with the Global Markets (FO) team as it grows its Asia presence.
- Provide legal input for structured products, transactions, and day‑to‑day markets queries.
- Offer support on bilateral loans, financing workstreams when required.
- Collaborate with the London head office and other global offices to ensure alignment in risk, documentation standards, and governance.
- Support the Senior Counsel who covers commodities, energy, precious metals, structured financings, and loans.
- The role will focus on commodities work for the first 6-12 months of the role (trade and structuring across different commodities products and trade finance).
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and applicable regulatory frameworks.
- Assist with contract management processes and contribute to improvements in documentation workflows.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 PQE (up to 15 PQE – new role so looking at a broad range), ideally from: a reputable law firm, or an in‑house role within financial markets or commodities sectors.
- Exposure to derivatives, securities, structured financing, or global markets products in Asia would be good;
- Otherwise physical commodities sector experience.
- Resilient and adaptable, with the ability to operate in a fast‑paced, cross‑border environment.
- Collaborative mindset, comfortable working in a lean team with a senior, experienced reporting line.
- Able to balance commerciality with legal risk considerations.
