Aquis Search has partnered with a leading global electronic market maker to hire a Legal Counsel for their Mumbai office.

The Mumbai office, as an exchange member trading on NSE and BSE, is one of the firm’s newer APAC hubs and has scaled rapidly, with an expanding footprint across index options, cash equities, futures, and single stock derivatives. India is now a critical strategic market for the wider business, and this role is central to that growth.

The successful candidate will join a global Legal function and will act as the primary legal adviser for the India business, reporting locally to the CFO and functionally to the APAC General Counsel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary point of contact for all legal matters relating to the Indian business, across legal entities
  • Partner with the local leadership team on legal risk, governance, and execution matters
  • Support commercial trading initiatives and business expansion, including new products, markets, counterparties, and financing arrangements
  • Advise on technology and infrastructure matters, including software, hardware, and market data agreements
  • Handle corporate and commercial matters spanning data, IP, AI, employment, procurement, and tax
  • Contribute to the design of local policies, governance standards, and risk management frameworks
  • Track legal and regulatory developments and support their implementation alongside Compliance
  • Manage relationships with external law firms in India
  • Support regulatory and contentious matters as they arise
  • Contribute to global and regional Legal initiatives, including contract frameworks and policy harmonisation

What We’re Looking For

  • At least 10 years’ PQE, with meaningful private practice and/or in-house experience (prior in-house experience strongly preferred)
  • A current practising certificate in India
  • Strong working knowledge of financial services regulation relevant to markets businesses
  • Expertise across corporate, commercial, contractual, and regulatory matters, including data, IP, and AI considerations
  • The ability to work independently while contributing to a global team
  • Strong stakeholder management skills across local, regional, and global audiences
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and drafting skills
  • A Company Secretarial qualification is advantageous but not essential
