About the Role
We are looking for a commercially minded and dependable Legal Counsel / Senior Legal Counsel to join our legal team.
This is a broad-based in-house role supporting a fast-moving technology business operating across Southeast Asia. You will work closely with the Head of Legal and business teams across product, commercial, sales, operations and finance on a wide range of legal matters.
The role will suit a lawyer who enjoys understanding how a fast-growing business actually works, is comfortable navigating new or ambiguous issues, and can translate legal requirements into practical solutions. You will be expected to independently own matters within your remit, exercise sound judgment, and drive them through to resolution.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Contracts
- Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, including:
- vendor, procurement and services agreements;
- hardware supply, procurement and distribution agreements;
- partnerships, commercial collaborations and marketing agreements;
- NDAs and other day-to-day business contracts.
- Identify key legal and commercial risks and propose pragmatic solutions that protect the company while enabling the business to move forward.
- Support the development and improvement of contract templates, playbooks and contracting processes.
Product & Regulatory
- Partner with product and business teams on the development and launch of new products, features and business models.
- Review product flows, customer-facing terms, disclosures and operational processes from a legal and regulatory perspective.
- Conduct or coordinate legal and regulatory assessments across priority markets, including monitoring relevant legal and regulatory developments and translating them into actionable requirements for the business.
Data, Technology & Intellectual Property
- Advise on privacy, data protection, data use and technology-related matters, working closely with product and technical teams to assess proposed data practices and structure legally sustainable approaches.
- Support matters involving software licensing, intellectual property ownership and licensing, third-party integrations and technology partnerships.
Corporate & General Legal Support
- Provide legal support on corporate, governance and operational matters, including regional entity and corporate governance matters as required.
- Assist with disputes, claims, termination matters and pre-litigation issues, including management of external counsel.
- Work with the Head of Legal and other legal stakeholders on higher-risk, strategic or novel matters affecting the business.
What We Are Looking For
- 4–8 years’ post-qualification experience.
- Admitted to practise law in Malaysia, Singapore or another recognised common law jurisdiction.
- Prior experience in a reputable law firm and/or in-house legal team.
- Experience supporting technology platforms, SaaS, fintech, payments, e-commerce or other technology-enabled businesses would be advantageous.
- Good grounding in commercial and contract law, with solid drafting and negotiation skills and the ability to take a practical, risk-based approach to legal issues.
- Ability to independently analyse unfamiliar legal and commercial issues and arrive at a considered recommendation.
- Ability to independently manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgment, and drive matters through to completion.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to explain legal issues clearly and pragmatically to non-legal teams.
- Strong written and spoken English. Proficiency in written and spoken Chinese would be highly advantageous.
