Summary:

A legal assistant who performs administrative and support tasks for attorneys. They assist attorneys by preparing materials for trials and meetings and maintaining professional communication with clients. Legal assistants assist attorneys with in-house paperwork, help by meeting with clients, conducting interviews, collecting statements and handling other hands-on tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Collecting documents: Legal assistants collect documents and information from clients, expert witnesses and other sources on behalf of the attorney or paralegal. To include faxes, emails or voicemails.

Writing reports and letters: A legal assistant drafts reports and legal documents/letters for current cases.
Assisting attorneys for meetings: A legal assistant assists the attorney/paralegal prior to meet and confer, mediation, arbitration and litigation. by compiling, maintaining and sharing information, notes and reports.
Preparing documents: As needed by the attorney or paralegal.
Communicating with clients: A legal assistant communicates with clients throughout the various steps of the legal process.

Competency:

Organization: A legal assistant handles substantial paperwork, case files and reports. Good organizational skills can help them prepare for any new cases or tasks that a lawyer assigns them.
Communication: Whether the legal assistant speaks with clients regularly, it’s important to have strong written and oral communication skills to present information to clients and attorneys clearly and succinctly.
Attention to detail: An attorney typically has a large number of files and documents for which they’re responsible. A detail-oriented legal assistant can help a lawyer keep track of them and make sure that the appropriate parties sign the documents and that the attorney submits the motions and pleadings.
Analytical skills: Having analytical skills can help a legal assistant apply logical reasoning and analyze data and information as it becomes available.
Positivity: Staying positive through any challenges faced in this career can improve morale in the legal atmosphere.
Time Management: Since legal assistant often track timelines and ensure the timely filing of motions and documents with the court, it’s important for them to manage their time effectively and prioritize projects.

Qualifications:

E filing and e service, docketing, calendaring, research, trial preparation

Education/Experience:

College degree preferred but not required. Required, high school diploma.

Language Ability:

Bilingual in Spanish and English is a plus but not required. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to draft simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual is required to have knowledge in Microsoft Office Word and Excel
