Illinois Institute of Technology’s Office of General Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice and representation to the University, and to faculty and staff acting in their roles as representatives of the University. The Staff Attorney works under the supervision of the Associate General Counsel handling a variety of transactional, regulatory, administrative and litigation matters.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Draft, review and negotiate agreements for a wide range of business and academic matters, ensuring alignment with University standards and business goals.

Monitor, develop and update policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws.

Advise on student legal matters, including academic misconduct, Title IX, and disability accommodations.

Provide advice and counsel on issues concerning enterprise risk management, including matters involving insurance and export control.

Special Schedule Requirements
The normal hours for this position are from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. From time to time this position may require work effort during evenings and/or weekends as major deadlines approach. Usually these periods are less than a week in duration and occur only a few times per year. This position is eligible for hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location up to two days per week, consistent with University policy.

Qualifications

Education & Experience
Juris Doctor from an ABA -accredited law school

Knowledge & Skills

3-5 years’ experience practicing in a law firm, corporate office, or university/college setting, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Experience with litigation, immigration, data security, intellectual property, export control and/or government contracting.

Ability to analyze complex legal issues and provide sound legal advice.

Ability to take initiative and manage tasks efficiently with limited direct oversight.

Proactively identify and resolve issues and tasks without being specifically instructed.

Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (particularly Word and Excel), Adobe and database management programs.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibility
The Staff Attorney will work closely with the three attorneys and the Assistant to the Vice President and General Counsel to support the legal and administrative duties handled by the Office of General Counsel. Key responsibilities include:

Litigation and litigation-related activities, including responding to subpoenas and discovery requests, and responding to other requests for records, and represent the University in contested matters.

Conduct legal research and prepare, organize and file court and government agency documents, including maintaining state and municipal licenses as needed.

Update and maintain office databases for patent, contract, international agreements, and other legal records and related information.

Analyze and process wage liens, deductions and garnishments, as well as bankruptcy filings.

Other duties as may be assigned by the General Counsel or Associate General Counsel.
