JOB SUMMARY:

The Deputy General Counsel reports to the General Counsel and serves as the chief legal officer in the absence of the General Counsel. The Deputy General Counsel is responsible for planning and organizing the daily operations of the OGC, including the day-to-day management of the work of the attorneys and staff under the General Counsel. This position will also maintain an appropriate case load including being the lead attorney for one or more substantive areas and is responsible for other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:
Managing the attorneys and staff and the day-to-day operations of the Office of General Counsel, including the intake and assignment of new matters; balancing the caseload amongst the attorneys in the office and outside counsel; receiving updates from each attorney and providing guidance on the successful resolution of legal matters; managing the office budget, expenditures and schedule; managing the H.R. requirements of the office; and briefing the General Counsel on matters of significant or institutional level risk.
Provide advice and counsel to senior management and the Board of Trustees on complex legal matters and associated risk mitigation strategies for issues facing a higher education institution, including academic, research, student affairs, athletic, and employment matters, and being the lead attorney responsible for one or more substantive areas.
Administer the selection, submission for Attorney General Approval, and billing of the outside counsel representing the university.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education – Juris Doctor
Experience – At least fifteen years experience as an attorney practicing in an area of law relevant to a higher education institution; experience managing and supervising a legal department or team.
Licenses & Certifications – Member in good standing of the SC Bar or can obtain a limited certificate of admission to practice.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
5 or more years of managing (1) an in-house legal department and/or (2) a legal practice area/team of a medium or large law firm.
Previous legal experience representing a higher education institution.

Manages Work of Others – Manages work of others including hiring, terminating, training and developing, reviewing performance and administering corrective action for staff. Plans organizational structure and job content.

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides Budget Input – Provides input into the budgeting process, and oversees fund allocation.

COMPENSATION INFORMATION

Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate’s previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson’s compensation guidelines.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL

Essential Level 2 employee

Required to maintain/resume essential support functions, deliver direct care services, and/or provide recovery support before normal operations resume. Some positions in this category may be required to work remotely or be on-call.
