The Role

Austrade is seeking a 2+years PQE lawyer to join the organisation as a Legal Adviser (APS 5/6).

Austrade’s Legal And Fraud Team Provides In-house Legal Services To The Global Agency, Ensuring That Austrade’s Programs And Administration Are Legally Sound. The Team Advises On a Broad Range Of Internal And External Issues, Including

governance and risk management;

statutory compliance;

dispute resolution;

anti-bribery, fraud and corruption control;

privacy, confidentiality and data protection;

contracting, procurement and grant administration; and

intellectual property protection.

As a Commonwealth agency with domestic and international operations, the team is required to be dynamic and flexible in its ability to handle legal challenges arising within Australia and in foreign jurisdictions.

This role is suited to a junior lawyer with an interest in developing a generalist, in-house lawyer skillset. Working with Senior Legal Advisers, the role covers a wide variety of legal matters with a commercial, administrative and international focus, and offers exposure to a range of legal issues faced by a multi-national agency.

Duties Include

In this role you will be required to:

provide general corporate and commercial legal guidance to onshore staff and staff operating in overseas jurisdictions;

review contracts to ensure all documentation and agreements entered into by Austrade meet Commonwealth standards;

provide guidance and instructions to assist with basic drafting of MOUs and grant agreements;

carry out legislative analysis in the context of Austrade’s operations and programs;

work with Austrade’s Procurement team to ensure all processes meet Commonwealth procurement requirements;

assist in the drafting and development of legal policies and procedures, legal operating guidelines, and conducting legal compliance reviews;

work collaboratively with other areas of Austrade (e.g. People, Finance and Security) to ensure Austrade staff understand and fully adhere to public sector standards for transparency, accountability and ethical behaviour;

manage a wide range of stakeholders, including internal clients, external parties, and briefing external counsel as required;

assist in the handling of requests under the Freedom of Information Act 1982; and

advise on the Privacy Act 1988, and offshore equivalents.
