The 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is located in beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado. The 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is committed to our community and our mission to administer justice, advocate for victims, and partner with law enforcement and citizens in this community for the deterrence and prevention of crime. The office has a staff of 225 employees comprised of attorneys, investigators, and support personnel.
Assist attorneys, and investigators with tasks necessary for successful prosecution. This is a “lead” position where a willingness to learn, train, and innovative is critical.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. High School diploma supplemented by one-year additional legal training.
Minimum five years’ experience in the legal field, three of which must be in criminal law.
Thorough knowledge of the ACTION database, including data input and data retrieval.
Working knowledge of legal terminology, procedures and regulations.
Ability to compose routine correspondence and other memoranda.
Excellent organization skills and ability to prioritize.
Ability to exercise discretion and make independent decisions.
Excellent computer skills, to include proficiency in typing, word processing and data base entry.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds safely.

Assists investigators and attorneys with trial preparations, to include composing standard motions, creating and maintaining trial notebooks, witness coordination, file reviews, travel arrangements, and obtaining records and reports necessary for prosecution.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD: Tasks should be handled in a professional and courteous manner and completed within deadline; legal documents submitted as final copy should be error free.
Assists with special projects, to include criminal history checks, revocation reviews, filing, and copying documents for discovery purposes.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD: Tasks will be handled in a professional and courteous manner and completed within deadline; an inability to meet deadlines will be communicated to the attorney or department manager, who will develop a plan for successful completion of the tasks.
Composes legal correspondence and independently handles routine tasks without the direction of the attorney or paralegal.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: Work product submitted as final copy should be error free. Correspondence should be done in a professional manner and with correct grammar and punctuation. Work should be completed within deadline or same day.
Reviews files before docket to insure subpoenas have been issued for contested hearings and that all documents needed for court have been placed correctly in the file. Any problems identified will be brought to the attention of the attorney.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD: All dockets will be reviewed within sufficient time of the docket date to address any problems found.
Enters case information into DA database to produce subpoenas; updates information and ensures accuracy and completeness.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD: Computer entries should be accurate and complete; subpoenas should be done as the files are received.
Prepares the file for first appearance in court, which includes preparing the Information, releasing initial discovery, and opening the case in Action.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD: Files must be ready for court on time; the Information must be accurate and error free; data entry should be done immediately after preparing the Information.
Handles other duties as requested, to include checking criminal records, scheduling meetings or any other tasks or special projects assigned by attorneys, paralegals, or investigators.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD: Will handle additional duties in a professional and courteous manner. Tasks should be completed same day or within deadline.
Undertakes the following Paralegal responsibilities as needed:
Assists attorneys with trial preparation, courtroom set-up, jury selection and attends trials when witness assistance is requested
Docket management and filing documents with the court
Witness coordination and scheduling interviews
Trial notebook preparation
Preparing general correspondence and legal documents such as affidavits, witness lists, motions, jury instructions, petitions for reimbursement for review, approval and use by attorney
Assist with extraditions when needed
Meet with juvenile diversion candidates to provide them with an overview of the program and provide them with the paperwork for signature if they agree to pursue the diversion program.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD: Work product must be complete and accurate and accordance with DDA guidelines. The Senior Legal Assistant must display a high level of professionalism and respect for the court, must dress and act in accordance with Rules of Professional Conduct and Office Dress Code. Requests for assistance and information from witnesses should be handled immediately or within a timely manner and with courtesy and respect.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to type, handle, or feel. Employee must talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This job requires close vision.
Work Environment: The work environment is that of general office. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
