What we do

The Alberta Utilities Commission is an independent, quasi-judicial agency of the province of Alberta. The AUC is responsible to ensure that the delivery of Alberta’s utility service takes place in a manner that is fair, responsible and in the public interest.

We regulate investor-owned natural gas, electric and water utilities and certain municipally owned electric utilities to ensure that customers receive safe and reliable service at just and reasonable rates. The AUC ensures that electric facilities are built, operated and decommissioned in an efficient and environmentally responsible way. The AUC also provides regulatory oversight of issues related to the development and operation of the wholesale electricity market in Alberta as well as the retail gas and electricity markets in the province.

The ideal candidate

As legal counsel at the AUC, you will be essential in ensuring regulatory compliance while providing expert legal guidance on utility matters. You will use your strong research, writing, and analytical skills to effectively communicate legal interpretations and arguments while working collaboratively with colleagues from across the organization.

Key responsibilities

Provide legal support on Commission related legal matters as part of an integrated member of the Commission’s Law Division. Responsibilities include:

Identification, research and analysis of legal issues, including the preparation of legal memos and opinions.

Provide legal advice on correspondence, rulings, information requests and Commission findings in accordance with instructions from Commission members.

Questioning at oral hearings.

Provide legal support in the preparation of Commission Rules and Bulletins.

Act as a fully integrated member of a cross-disciplinary team assigned to a file.

Represent the AUC positively to the external community through formal interactions on applications.

Represent the AUC at the Alberta Court of Appeal

Qualifications

As the ideal candidate you will possess:

LL.B. with a minimum of 4 years of related work experience.

Member in good standing of Law Society of Alberta.

Litigation experience before courts and administrative tribunals an asset.

Excellent research and analysis skills, ability to effectively:

Identify relevant legal issues.

Identify and interpret relevant statutory provisions.

Excellent writing skills.

Excellent oral advocacy skills.

Knowledge of administrative law, utility legislation and economic regulation.

Strong organization, teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to effectively and independently manage workload .

Ability to synthesize information and data to identify implications and possible consequences.

Enjoys intellectually challenging conditions and derives learning from a range of different situations, opportunities and sources.
