Position Location: Durham Offices (Durham and Vance)

Position Summary: Legal Aid of North Carolina seeks a full-time Staff Attorney to work in the Durham and Vance Offices, which provides free legal assistance in civil matters to low-income clients in Caswell, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Person, Vance and Warren Counties. The selected applicant will be trained and practice in multiple areas of law, primarily family (particularly domestic violence-related issues) and housing in our rural counties within our satellite office located in Vance County. Opportunities to practice other areas of law will be afforded in public benefits, consumer, education and employment law. Durham main office is based in Durham County with a satellite office in Vance County. Our Durham and Vance Offices offer the opportunity to do meaningful legal work in historic cities and towns.

Job Description: The Staff Attorney will:

Provide direct legal services to clients in a variety of practice areas.
Interview clients and identify their legal problems.
Devise strategies for resolving client legal matters.
Represent clients in courtroom hearings.
Write and argue motions.
Draft pleadings and other legal papers.
Draft and engage in discovery.
Provide community education and outreach in impacted communities.
Represent Legal Aid in the community served by engaging with the legal community.
Have opportunities for participation and leadership in the North Carolina Bar Association and other local bar associations.

Qualifications: Candidates applying for this position should have the following qualifications:

A passion to serve low-income clients.
A commitment to the mission and values of Legal Aid of North Carolina.
A commitment to, appreciation for and understanding of organizational values around diversity, equity and inclusion.
A juris doctorate and a license to practice law in the State of North Carolina.
Good communication skills.
Strong writing skills
Prior legal services experience is a plus.
No pending North Carolina State Bar disciplinary proceedings.
Reliable transportation to and from courthouses and offices spanning a seven-county area.

Salary and Benefits:

Competitive salary range commensurate with the candidate’s competencies and experience from $50,500 to $95,500.
Employee medical, vision, dental, and life insurance premiums fully paid by employer
401(k) retirement plan with discretionary contributions by employer (with no matching required)
All CLE fees, bar dues, license fees, malpractice insurance, and some voluntary legal association fees fully paid by employer.
Generous Leave Policy: paid leave accrues at 1.75 days per month (21 days per year, or 4+ weeks) for the first two years, and 2.5 days per month thereafter (30 days/6 weeks per year).
Additional paid time off: 16 paid holidays, 2 floating holidays, and other paid leave. Paid sabbatical in addition to other leave every seven years.
