Overview
We are seeking experienced attorneys to join our case to handle a complex, high-visibility matter involving a civil lawsuit against a municipal entity (a suburb near Columbia/Colombia area—Richland County, SC and related criminal exposure for a client. This case includes serious allegations involving the unlawful detention and mistreatment of an individual at a public facility, following which our client’s husbands situation escalated into criminal proceedings.
This is a high-accountability role requiring litigation leadership, strong courtroom skills, and the ability to manage parallel civil and criminal tracks with precision and discretion.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead Civil Litigation Against Government Entities
Draft, file, and litigate a multimillion-dollar civil action against municipal and/or public-entity defendants
Conduct legal research and motion practice involving constitutional rights, tort claims, and government liability doctrines
Prepare expert-related workstreams (medical/standard-of-care/incident reconstruction as applicable)
Coordinate Parallel Criminal Proceedings
Provide criminal defense strategy guidance and coordinate with criminal counsel (or directly handle defense if qualified)
Manage false arrest / unlawful detention legal theories, discovery, and motion practice
Work closely with investigators to ensure evidence integrity across both civil and criminal matters
Case Strategy and Litigation Management
Build aggressive, defensible case strategy with clear milestones and timelines
Manage discovery, subpoenas, document requests, depositions, and witness preparation
Maintain strict responsiveness to court deadlines and evidence handling requirements
Client Communication and Public-Facing Professionalism
Communicate with the client and family in a trauma-informed, discreet, and professional manner
Coordinate messaging appropriate for a high-visibility case, including media-risk awareness
Courtroom Advocacy
Argue motions, attend hearings, and represent the firm’s position in contested proceedings
Maintain preparedness for emergency filings and rapid procedural developments
Qualifications
J.D. degree and active license to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction(s)
Substantial litigation experience (civil and/or criminal), with demonstrated success in motion practice and discovery
Experience with civil rights / constitutional litigation and claims involving governmental entities
Experience with arrest/detention-related defense (false arrest / unlawful detention / due process concepts) preferred
Strong legal research and writing skills
Ability to draft complaints, motions, briefs, and declarations at a high standard
Professional judgment under pressure
Comfortable with complex, time-sensitive matters and intense scrutiny
Team leadership
Ability to coordinate investigators, paralegals, experts, and—if necessary—local co-counsel
Preferred Experience
Prior cases involving:
Public facility incidents
Restraining orders, detention, or law enforcement/public-entity liability
Wrongful arrest / unlawful detention defenses
Familiarity with:
Government entity procedures, immunities, notice requirements, and administrative prerequisites
Protective order practice and evidence preservation protocols
Prior experience handling or supporting high-profile litigation (optional but valuable)
Required Skills
Excellent oral advocacy and persuasive writing
Strong attention to detail in drafting and case documentation
Ability to manage parallel proceedings without cross-contamination of strategy or evidence
High integrity, confidentiality, and discretion
Compensation and Work Setting
Compensation: Large Percentage of muliti million dollars lawsuit and $20 K bonus.
