Position: Law Enforcement Officer Recruit

Opportunity
The sponsored recruit will attend a law enforcement academy to prepare for becoming a Police Officer with the University of Central Florida Police Department. The sponsor will study fundamentals of law enforcement including criminal law, laws of arrest, traffic laws, juvenile law, principles of law enforcement, rules of evidence, rules of search and seizure, patrol theory and methods, and report writing.
They will participate in demonstrations on arrest and control methods, physical conditioning and self-defense, firearms procedures, and will take examinations on each topic as well as a state exam.
Responsibilities
- Incumbents are expected to successfully complete the Law Enforcement Recruit Academy and transition to Police Officer or be terminated from the position.
- Maintain a passing grade in all academy courses including:
Law, Vehicle Operations, Communications, First Aid, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, Patrol, Investigations, Investigating Offenses, Traffic Stops, Crash Investigations, Tactical Applications, Dart-Firing Stun Gun and State Exam Review. - Participate in practical skills and field exercises: courtroom demeanor and testifying, report writing, identification, collection and preservation of evidence, interviewing and interrogation, radio communications, patrol techniques, traffic direction, traffic crash investigations, police vehicle operation, defensive tactics, arrest techniques, firearms training, chemical agent application, CPR and first aid, fingerprinting and sobriety testing.
- Keep supervisor apprised of training progress and test scores.
- When not actively in academy courses, perform office-related duties during normal business hours (copying, faxing, scanning, answering phones, clerical tasks).
- Essential Employees may be required to work during declared or undeclared emergencies.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for sponsorship to the Florida Recruit Training Academy to obtain certification, applicants must meet: at least 19 years of age; U.S. citizen; high school diploma or equivalent; no felony or misdemeanor involving perjury or false statements; no dishonorable discharge from the Armed Forces. Must pass a vigorous background investigation including psychological, physical, drug testing, and Computer Voice Stress Analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a civilian in law enforcement or understanding of officer responsibilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate and work with faculty, staff, students, vendors, and outside guests in a professional manner.
- Knowledge of local and university geography and landmarks.
