About Us:
Texas Criminal Defense Group is a statewide, trial-focused law firm that defends individuals accused of crimes across Texas. We’re seeking an experienced Criminal Defense Appellate Attorney to join our growing team. This is a remote position, but applicants must be licensed to practice in Texas.
This role focuses on post-conviction work, including criminal appeals, writs of habeas corpus, expunctions, and non-disclosures. You’ll collaborate with our trial attorneys to ensure proper issue preservation and then take the lead on handling the appeal or post-conviction process. You’ll also be supported by a dedicated team of legal assistants.
Key Responsibilities:
Appellate and Post-Conviction Work
Handle all aspects of criminal appellate defense, including drafting appellate briefs, motions for rehearing, and writs of habeas corpus.
Analyze trial records for reversible error, constitutional violations, and post-conviction relief claims.
File and argue direct appeals and writs before Texas Courts of Appeals and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
Provide strategic support to trial lawyers on preservation of error.
Expunctions & Non-Disclosures
Handle petitions for expunction and non-disclosure from intake through hearing.
Draft and file legal documents, respond to objections, and attend hearings (remote or in person as needed).
Stay up to date with current legal standards in this area.
Trial Support
Assist trial attorneys with legal research, motion drafting, and trial strategy.
Ensure proper preservation of appellate issues during trial-level proceedings.
Team Collaboration
Work closely with a dedicated team of legal assistants who will assist with drafting, filing, and client communication.
Be a part of a larger team focused on aggressive defense, second chances, and client success.
Qualifications:
Licensed to practice law in Texas (required).
Minimum 7 years of experience in criminal law with emphasis on appeals, expunctions, non-disclosures, or post-conviction relief.
Excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills.
Knowledge of Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and Texas Rules of Appellate Procedure.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Preferred:
Board Certification in Criminal Appellate Law is highly valued and will significantly increase compensation.
