Position Location: This position is based at CIU – Raleigh, North Carolina.

Position Summary: The statewide Second Chance Project is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney. The ideal candidate is passionate about the Second Chance practice, is a creative problem solver and highly motivated. The position requires the ability to communicate effectively with clients, multitask, and handle a caseload of expunction & driver’s license restoration files. The position requires occasional travel to other counties.
Job Description: The Staff Attorney will:
Provide direct legal services to clients in expunctions and driver’s license restoration.
Draft expunction paperwork.
Communicate with district attorney offices across the state.
Represent clients in courtroom hearings.
Write and argue motions.
Assist with Second Chance Project statewide expansion opportunities.
Assist with outreach events, including providing community education to the public, community partners, and justice involved people.
Support current law school expunction clinic projects.
Represent Legal Aid in the legal community by engaging with the legal community.
Have opportunities for participation and leadership in North Carolina Bar Association and other local bar associations.
Qualifications: Candidates applying for this position should have the following qualifications:
A passion to serve low-income clients in the Second Chance arena.
A commitment to the mission and values of Legal Aid of North Carolina.
A commitment to, appreciation for and understanding of organizational values around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
A juris doctorate and a license to practice law in the State of North Carolina.
No pending North Carolina State Bar disciplinary proceedings.
Good communication and time management skills.
Willing to travel within a 2-hour radius – including some Saturdays for outreach events.
Self-motivated, with the proven ability to set goals and meet self-imposed and external deadlines.
Works well in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Prior experience with expunction and driver’s license restoration is preferred but not required.
Salary and Employee Benefits:
Competitive salary commensurate with the candidate’s experience, from $50,500 to $95,500.

401(k) retirement plan with discretionary contributions by employer (with no matching required)
All CLE fees, bar dues, license fees, malpractice insurance, and some voluntary legal association fees fully paid by employer
Generous Leave Policy: paid leave accrues at 1.75 days per month (21 days per year) for the first two years and 2.5 years per month thereafter (30 days per year).
Additional paid time off: 14 paid holidays in 2025, 2 floating holidays and other paid leave. Paid sabbatical in addition to other leave, every seven years.
