Social Justice Collaborative (SJC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit legal services organization based in California. We focus on serving low-income immigrants facing deportation and provide holistic, free, and low-cost legal assistance.
Each year, SJC provides direct legal representation to hundreds of families navigating the immigration system. Every team member plays a critical role in ensuring immigrants receive high-quality legal support, and we seek individuals who are passionate about defending the rights of immigrants and committed to expanding legal access.
Position Overview
SJC is seeking an immigration attorney to expand free legal services for Marin County residents by handling a caseload, reducing intake backlogs, and launching a pro se clinic program. This role will serve as SJC’s point person for Marin County, ensuring that individuals receive timely legal support through direct representation, streamlined intake, and structured self-filing guidance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Legal Representation & Case Management
Maintain a caseload of complex immigration cases for clients, with a focus on asylum, removal defense, and humanitarian relief.
Ensure cases move efficiently by managing deadlines, filings, and client communication.
Work alongside staff and volunteers to increase representation for individuals who might otherwise go unrepresented.
2. Intake & Reducing Waitlists
Conduct and review initial screenings to reduce intake backlog and quickly identify urgent cases.
Prioritize cases based on legal urgency and eligibility, ensuring individuals receive appropriate legal support.
Streamline intake processes to increase access to services without long wait periods.
3. Pro Se Clinic Development
Assist in launching structured pro se clinics that provide self-filing guidance (e.g., asylum applications for those facing the one-year deadline).
Help develop and update training materials to equip staff, volunteers, and pro bono attorneys in supporting clinic participants.
Oversee legal accuracy and effectiveness of the program while ensuring integration with SJC’s broader services.
4. Marin County Representation & Outreach
Serve as SJC’s primary attorney in Marin County, attending in-person events, meetings, and community gatherings as needed.
Build and sustain partnerships with local organizations, legal service providers, and community groups to strengthen legal support networks.
Deliver Know Your Rights (KYR) workshops and other legal education sessions when necessary.
Qualifications
J.D. and active bar membership in any U.S. jurisdiction (California preferred).
Minimum 1 year of immigration law experience, including asylum and removal defense.
Experience managing casework and intake processes for vulnerable immigrant populations.
Familiarity with pro se legal support models or prior experience developing legal clinics is a plus.
Ability to work independently while collaborating with pro bono attorneys, volunteers, and staff.
Strong commitment to expanding legal access for underrepresented communities.
Hybrid position – most work can and will be done remotely, but as partnerships in Marin grow, occasional in-person presence (a few times per month for meetings, events, or community needs) will be required.Willingness to travel within Marin County for in-person legal work, events, and outreach.
Work Environment: Hybrid (remote with occasional in-person meetings and events in Marin County, SJC’s Berkeley office, or immigration court hearings)

Compensation
