We're looking for an experienced In-house General Counsel to lead our Legal and Governance function. Reporting to the Executive Director, you'll be a trusted advisor to the Executive Team, helping guide strategic decisions while ensuring our legal, governance and commercial frameworks support sustainable growth.

You'll play a key role in partnering with leaders across the business to navigate complexity, manage risk and enable confident decision-making as we continue to grow one of Australia's leading build-to-rent platforms.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide strategic legal advice across corporate, commercial, property, development and operational matters  
  • Lead Apt's legal and governance function, ensuring legal strategy supports business growth and long-term objectives  
  • Oversee company secretarial responsibilities, board governance and statutory compliance  
  • Lead the review, negotiation and management of commercial contracts, development agreements, leases and transaction documentation  
  • Support acquisitions, developments, investment transactions and financing activities from a legal and governance perspective  
  • Identify, assess and manage legal and commercial risk, providing practical, commercially focused solutions  
  • Partner with Executive, Development, Investment, Operations and Finance teams to support strategic decision-making  
  • Manage external legal advisers to deliver high-quality, cost-effective legal services  
  • Strengthen governance frameworks, policies and processes that support a growing business  
  • Help shape a culture of accountability, integrity and informed decision-making across the organisation 

What we’re looking for:

  • Qualified Australian legal practitioner with a current practising certificate (or eligibility to obtain one)  
  • Extensive post-admission experience within a leading law firm and/or in-house legal environment  
  • Strong experience across corporate, commercial, property and governance law  
  • Demonstrated experience supporting complex property, development, investment or infrastructure transactions  
  • Strong understanding of corporate governance, company secretarial responsibilities and regulatory compliance  
  • Commercial judgement with the ability to balance legal risk and business outcomes  
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and influencing skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships across all levels of the organisation  
  • A practical, solutions-focused mindset and the confidence to provide clear, pragmatic advice  
  • Experience working with executive leadership teams and boards highly regarded 
  • Previous Company Secretary experience or exposure to board governance will be highly regarded
