Social Justice Collaborative (SJC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit legal services organization based in California. We focus on serving low-income immigrants in their deportation cases and provide free and low-cost legal assistance to mostly Central American clients. Each year, SJC provides direct legal representation to hundreds of Every SJC team member plays a critical role in the organization’s mission and must be passionate about and dedicated to the rights of immigrants.

SJC seeks an experienced full-time immigration staff attorney to operate remotely for our offices. In addition to remote case management and client interaction, the position involves remote immigration court hearings as well as perhaps may occur in person.

You will handle a heavy caseload of deportation defense cases along with a staff of other attorneys in a collaborative environment, including frequent court appearances via phone, WebEx, Zoom, CourtCall and other platforms. Attorney will work closely with paralegals, assistants and other support staff to provide holistic legal services.

Note that SJC is a high-volume nonprofit office with a large group of support staff. Work is horizontally prepared, the majority of staff attorney time involves document review, preparation for and court appearances. Flexibility for assignments is key.

Responsibilities and Duties

Manage a large client caseload of deportation (removal) defense matters including asylum, U visa, T Visa, VAWA and SIJS relief.
Work with attorneys, DOJ-accredited representatives, paralegals and other staff who contribute to serving clients.
Appear remotely at SJC virtual clinics to provide support to staff and pro bono attorneys
Prepare for and appear before EOIR, USCIS and State Court on behalf of clients, primarily in asylum and SIJS hearings
Supervise intern(s) to assist in completion of case work
Maintain complete and accurate client records in electronically in our case management software.
Travel as necessary on a limited basis, including occasional evening/weekend events.

Qualifications

Active bar membership in good standing in any U.S. state bar or the District of Columbia
At least one year of immigration legal experience
Commitment to serving immigrant populations and under-served communities
Self-starter, ability to self-direct, and manage work autonomously
Great communication skills, values working collaboratively in a team
Fluency in Spanish would be preferred
