Responsibilities
- Coordinate responses of internal and external staff to multiple emergency situations.
- Facilitate medical communications during emergencies.
- Execute hospital-wide communication procedures for major system outages, inclement weather, and disaster situations.
- Monitor alarms and provide emergency escalation for alarms.
- Maintain the release of information status in the patient profile in the hospital inpatient directory.
- Assist users with service and information related to communication technologies.
- Provide call processing and on-call services for outside and affiliated agencies.
- Screen calls and direct communications among faculty, staff, students; patients and visitors; law enforcement agencies; and the general public.
- Place long-distance and international calls.
- Establish multiple-party conference calls and monitored calls.
- Respond to incoming calls on the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf.
- Operate and maintain the Amcom call processing system.
- Operate and maintain the Hospital Paging System and pagers.
- Understand and apply basic knowledge of computer technology and various software packages.
- Maintain unit quality control.
- Provide input in the development of unit policies and procedures.
- Perform job functions efficiently and effectively.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- In-depth knowledge of unit, department, and institutional routines, functions, policies, procedures, and forms.
- Familiarity with Telecommunications Center emergency procedures and hospital disaster plans, including Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) and HIPAA.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of telecommunication systems and ability to operate systems efficiently.
- Skill in utilizing a computer, software, online systems, and conventional office equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, visitors, staff, and the public in a variety of situations.
- Ability to work in a high-intensity environment.
- Ability to prioritize work assignments and daily tasks.
- Ability to read, interpret, and accurately execute oral and written instruction and exercise judgment in its application.
- Ability to document information timely and accurately.
- Ability to work effectively in a noisy environment.
- Good hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and ability to execute oral and written instructions.
Location:
University of Iowa Health Care Downtown Campus – 500
E. Market St., Iowa City, IA 52245
Schedule:
During Initial Training – 08:00 to 16:30, Mon‑Fri;
During Continued Training – 15:00 to 21:30, Mon‑Fri;
After Training – 07:00 to 17:30, Saturday and Sunday including holidays. Flexibility for coverage and on-call as necessary.
Pay Grade: 10 – Salary $21,349.80 per year.
