Position Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable professional to lead efforts related to land loss in historically underserved communities. The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in real estate transactions, a foundational understanding of heirs’ property challenges, and demonstrated skill in family mediation and conflict resolution. This role will play a critical part in preserving landownership, facilitating clear title resolution, and supporting equitable land retention for families impacted by heirs’ property issues.
This position works at the intersection of land tenure, legal documentation, financial literacy, estate planning, forestry/agricultural asset management, and generational wealth preservation across North Carolina and Virginia.
Key Responsibilities
Guide families through the heirs’ property resolution process, ensuring clear communication and culturally responsive engagement.
Conduct and oversee real estate transactions related to partition sales, title clearing, and property consolidation.
Collaborate with attorneys, surveyors, title professionals, and community-based organizations to resolve land ownership complications.
Provide family mediation and facilitate consensus-building among property heirs.
Educate families about legal and financial processes to prevent future land loss.
Maintain a strong awareness of the historical and systemic factors contributing to land loss in underserved communities and integrate that understanding into daily work.
Document case progress, maintain confidentiality, and manage multiple active property files.
Support outreach and education initiatives around heirs’ property rights and retention strategies.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in real estate, legal studies, social work, mediation, or related field (advanced degree).
Minimum 3 years of experience in real estate transactions, property law, or land title resolution.
Demonstrated understanding of heirs’ property issues, underserved and rural communities.
Mediation or conflict resolution training/certification is strongly preferred
Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to work empathetically with families in sensitive situations.
· Commitment to community empowerment, land justice, and equitable resource access.
· Paralegal certification or legal research background
· Experience with heirs’ property resolution
· Familiarity with USDA/NRCS/FSA programs
· Understanding of conservation easements and land trusts
· Genealogy or probate research experience
Preferred Skills
· Knowledge of USDA heir property programs, legal aid processes, or land retention grants
· Experience working with nonprofit or government programs addressing property or economic justice.
· Familiarity with GIS mapping, land records systems, or title research tools.
· Bachelor’s degree in legal studies, Public Administration, Finance, Agriculture, Forestry, or related field
· 5+ years’ experience in one or more of the following:
o Estate planning support
o Heirs’ property or land tenure work
o Asset protection or wealth management
o Real estate/title research
o Agricultural or forestry program administration
· Knowledge of wills, trusts, deeds, probate, and land ownership structures
· Experience working with underserved or rural landowners
· Strong documentation and case management skills
· Ability to travel throughout NC and VA
