The Law Firm is seeking an accomplished Head of Workers’ Compensation Division to build, lead, and scale the firm’s California applicant-side Workers’ Compensation practice.

This is a senior leadership position for an experienced Workers’ Compensation Attorney who brings more than exceptional legal skills. We are looking for a proven leader with the experience, operational mindset, and entrepreneurial drive to develop a high-performing Workers’ Compensation Division from the ground up and successfully scale it as the firm grows.

The Head of Workers’ Compensation Division will have responsibility for the legal, operational, and strategic performance of the practice, including team leadership, case strategy and quality, staffing, workflows, technology utilization, performance metrics, client service, operational infrastructure, and sustainable department growth.

The ideal candidate has 7+ years of substantial California workers’ compensation experience, significant applicant-side experience, demonstrated success leading attorneys and legal support professionals, and an understanding of how to build the systems and infrastructure necessary to operate and scale a successful workers’ compensation practice.

This position will work directly with firm leadership and will play an integral role in the continued growth of The Law Firm.

Leadership & Division Development

The Head of Workers’ Compensation Division will:

  • Build, lead, develop, and scale the Workers’ Compensation Division.
  • Develop and execute short- and long-term strategies for the growth of the practice.
  • Establish an effective organizational structure as case volume and staffing increase.
  • Assess caseload capacity and establish appropriate attorney and support-staff ratios.
  • Identify staffing needs and participate in recruiting, interviewing, selecting, onboarding, and developing attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, and other WC professionals.
  • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, performance expectations, and accountability throughout the division.
  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop attorneys and support staff.
  • Build a collaborative, accountable, results-oriented department culture.
  • Develop future leaders within the division as the practice expands.
  • Partner directly with firm leadership regarding department strategy, growth, staffing, performance, challenges, and opportunities.

Operational Development & Scalability

A significant component of this position is developing the operational infrastructure necessary to create an efficient and scalable Workers’ Compensation Division.

The Head will:

  • Design and implement standardized workflows covering the complete workers’ compensation case lifecycle.
  • Establish processes for intake, case opening, initial evaluation, medical treatment, discovery, depositions, QME/AME development, hearings, litigation, settlement, and case closure.
  • Establish case-management standards and attorney/support-staff workflows.
  • Develop standardized forms, templates, checklists, reporting tools, and litigation protocols.
  • Implement calendaring, deadline-management, quality-control, and case-review procedures.
  • Establish systems for monitoring case progression and identifying matters requiring escalation or additional attention.
  • Develop appropriate attorney supervision and case-review processes.
  • Evaluate and implement technology, automation, and other tools that improve efficiency and scalability.
  • Identify operational bottlenecks and develop solutions that improve productivity without sacrificing legal quality or client service.
  • Build systems that allow the division to increase case volume while maintaining appropriate attorney oversight and client communication.
  • Collaborate with firm leadership and operations regarding technology, staffing, systems, and resource requirements.

Department Performance & Accountability

The Head of Workers’ Compensation Division will establish meaningful performance measures that provide visibility into the productivity, financial performance, and overall health of the practice.

This may include monitoring and analyzing:

  • Active caseload and caseload distribution.
  • New matters opened.
  • Case aging and progression.
  • Hearings, depositions, trials, and other litigation activity.
  • Medical-legal development.
  • Settlement and resolution activity.
  • Attorney fees generated and collected.
  • Department financial performance.
  • Attorney and staff productivity.
  • Client communication and responsiveness.
  • Staffing capacity and future hiring needs.
  • Case quality and compliance with department standards.

The Head will use department data to identify trends, improve performance, forecast resource requirements, and support sustainable growth.

Legal Leadership & Case Oversight

The Head of Workers’ Compensation Division must also be an accomplished California workers’ compensation practitioner capable of providing substantive legal leadership to the department.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide strategic oversight of the division’s applicant-side workers’ compensation caseload.
  • Maintain an appropriate individual caseload based on the evolving leadership and operational responsibilities of the position.
  • Provide guidance on complex, high-value, or strategically significant cases.
  • Develop litigation and settlement strategies.
  • Review matters requiring escalation or senior attorney involvement.
  • Appear before the California Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board (WCAB), as appropriate.
  • Handle and/or supervise depositions, conferences, Mandatory Settlement Conferences, expedited hearings, trials, reconsiderations, and removals.
  • Provide guidance regarding QME/AME reporting, medical treatment, causation, apportionment, temporary disability, permanent disability, and other medical-legal and benefit issues.
  • Establish standards for settlement evaluation and negotiation.
  • Ensure legal work throughout the division meets the firm’s expectations for quality, professionalism, ethics, advocacy, and client service.
  • Remain current on California workers’ compensation statutes, regulations, WCAB decisions, and relevant case law.

Team Leadership & Development

The Head will serve as the primary leader for attorneys and staff assigned to the Workers’ Compensation Division.

Responsibilities include:

  • Directly supervise attorneys and key WC team members.
  • Establish individual and team performance expectations.
  • Conduct regular case reviews, attorney meetings, and team meetings.
  • Mentor attorneys and develop their litigation, negotiation, case-management, and client-service skills.
  • Provide timely coaching and performance feedback.
  • Identify training and professional-development needs.
  • Address performance and workflow concerns proactively.
  • Foster accountability while maintaining a professional and collaborative work environment.

Client Experience

The Head will establish and maintain high standards for the client experience throughout the Workers’ Compensation Division.

This includes:

  • Establishing client communication and responsiveness standards.
  • Ensuring clients receive meaningful and timely updates regarding their cases.
  • Developing escalation procedures for client concerns.
  • Monitoring service issues and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensuring attorneys and staff communicate professionally, compassionately, and effectively with injured workers.
  • Developing scalable processes that preserve personalized representation as the division grows.

Cross-Practice Collaboration

The Head will collaborate with attorneys and leadership across The Law Firm to identify and appropriately manage matters involving overlapping practice areas.

This may include:

  • Identifying potential employment-law claims associated with workplace injuries.
  • Identifying potential third-party personal injury claims arising from workplace accidents.
  • Establishing effective referral and handoff protocols between practice areas.
  • Coordinating strategy when clients have multiple related claims.
  • Ensuring appropriate cross-practice opportunities are identified and evaluated.

Required Qualifications

  • Active and in-good-standing membership with the State Bar of California.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of recent California workers’ compensation experience as a licensed practicing attorney.
  • Significant California applicant-side workers’ compensation experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently handle workers’ compensation cases from inception through resolution.
  • Substantial experience appearing before the WCAB.
  • Strong deposition, hearing, trial, negotiation, and settlement experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of California workers’ compensation law, WCAB procedures, medical-legal issues, regulations, and applicable case law.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and supervising attorneys and legal support professionals.
  • Demonstrated experience developing or improving legal operations, systems, workflows, or case-management processes.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to analyze caseload and performance data and translate information into operational decisions.
  • Ability to successfully balance legal practice, team leadership, operational responsibilities, and strategic growth.
  • Strong commitment to exceptional client service and ethical legal practice.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • 10+ years of California applicant-side workers’ compensation experience.
  • Previous experience as a Managing Attorney, Supervising Attorney, Department Head, Practice Group Leader, or comparable leadership position.
  • Demonstrated experience building or significantly scaling a workers’ compensation practice or department.
  • Experience developing and managing a high-volume applicant-side WC operation.
  • Experience recruiting, training, mentoring, and developing attorneys and support staff.
  • Experience establishing department KPIs, reporting, and case-management standards.
  • Experience implementing legal technology, automation, and process improvements.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage growth while maintaining legal quality and client satisfaction.
  • Experience collaborating with personal injury and/or employment-law practices.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus.

Compensation & Incentive Opportunity

The anticipated base salary range for this position is:

$225,000–$300,000 annually

In addition to base compensation, the Head of Workers’ Compensation Division will be eligible for an incentive-based bonus opportunity tied to the performance, growth, and success of the Workers’ Compensation Division.

The specific incentive percentage, performance criteria, and bonus structure will be established by firm leadership.

Because this is a leadership and practice-building position, incentive considerations may include factors such as department growth, collected attorney fees, financial performance, achievement of established performance objectives, operational development, team performance, and the overall successful growth and management of the Workers’ Compensation Division.

Actual base compensation will be determined based on the candidate’s directly relevant California workers’ compensation experience, leadership history, demonstrated success building and managing legal teams, operational experience, and ability to build and scale a successful applicant-side workers’ compensation practice.
