Head of Legal Jobs in United States at Ancient Remedies

Title: Head of Legal

Company: Ancient Remedies

Location: United States

Ancient Remedies is a fast-moving natural health and wellness publishing company on a mission to help people help themselves through holistic medicine. We sell direct-to-consumer health and wellness books, and we are scaling quickly.

The role:

As we grow, legal and compliance can no longer be handled reactively by founders, outside firms, and scattered internal processes. We need someone to build the internal operating system that protects the company while helping it move faster. This role exists because our business touches a lot of sensitive areas: health claims, advertising compliance, customer disputes, refunds, shipping, privacy, IP protection, vendor contracts, platform rules, and outside counsel management. None of these areas need a giant legal department yet. But they do need a strong owner. We operate in a space that draws active FTC scrutiny. Health and wellness advertising, testimonials, before-and-after claims, and substantiated outcomes are all areas where the FTC has brought significant enforcement action — and where the line between compliant and non-compliant copy is not always obvious. This role is the company’s first line of defense. We are looking for someone who can turn legal risk into clear systems, workflows, standards, and accountability. This is not a traditional General Counsel role. You do not need to be the expert in every legal specialty. You need to be the person who knows what needs to be controlled, what needs to be escalated, what needs outside counsel, and what needs to become a repeatable process inside the company. You will have real autonomy and responsibility. You will work directly with founders and across marketing, customer support, operations, finance, product, and external law firms.

What you’ll own:

  • Build and maintain our legal and compliance operating system across marketing, CX, operations, privacy, IP, contracts, and outside counsel.
  • Create a claims review process for ads, landing pages, emails, funnels, advertorials, upsells, testimonials, and health-related copy.
  • Build and maintain a claims matrix and substantiation library so our marketing team knows what we can say, what needs review, and what is off-limits.
  • Partner with customer support and operations to identify recurring refund, dispute, shipping, delivery, and customer-expectation issues before they become legal problems.
  • Create clear escalation processes for demand letters, legal threats, customer disputes, chargebacks, failed deliveries, and refund issues.
  • Manage outside counsel by preparing clean evidence packets, tracking matters, controlling scope, following deadlines, and turning legal advice into internal SOPs.
  • Oversee our IP protection process, including unauthorized sellers, copycats, counterfeiters, trademark misuse, copyright misuse, and platform takedowns.
  • Own privacy and data compliance operations, including cookie banner workflows, pixel/vendor tracking, privacy policy updates, and customer data requests.
  • Build a lightweight contract system for agencies, affiliates, vendors, contractors, software tools, creators, logistics providers, and other partners.
  • Give founders a clear monthly view of legal/compliance risk, open matters, outside counsel spend, customer-risk patterns, IP enforcement, and key fixes needed.

Who we’re looking for:

We are looking for a high-ownership legal/compliance operator who can build from scratch. You may be a lawyer, but you do not have to be. You may come from legal operations, compliance, advertising review, consumer protection, e-commerce, health/wellness, supplements, DTC, media, publishing, or a fast-moving consumer brand.

What matters most is judgment.

YOU’RE A STRONG FIT IF YOU:

  • Think in systems, not one-off tasks.
  • Are highly organized and evidence-driven.
  • Can manage outside counsel without blindly outsourcing your brain.
  • Understand that customer support issues can become legal issues — and that a spike in refund complaints or chargeback rates is often a leading indicator of regulatory attention.
  • Know how to protect a business without becoming the “Department of No.”
  • Can tell a marketer, “We can’t say it that way, but here are three safer versions.”
  • Have working knowledge of FTC advertising law: what substantiation means, how the Endorsement Guides apply to testimonials and influencers, what makes a health claim deceptive under Section 5 of the FTC Act, and how to read an FTC warning letter or civil investigative demand.
  • Understand how US consumer protection law works at the federal and state level — FTC Act, state UDAP statutes, state AG enforcement — and how DTC health and wellness companies get into trouble.
  • Have the backbone to challenge founders, growth teams, vendors, and agencies when something creates real risk.
  • Are comfortable operating in ambiguity and creating structure where none exists.
  • Write clearly and can turn messy situations into simple memos, SOPs, checklists, and decisions.
  • Care about speed, ownership, and building something useful — not creating bureaucracy.

What we offer:

  • Competitive salary – Benchmarked to market rate with regular reviews as we grow.
  • Performance bonuses – Your results are recognized and rewarded. We celebrate people who move the needle.
  • Fully remote – Work from wherever you do your best thinking. No commute, no compromise.
  • Flexible hours – Async-friendly and autonomy-driven. We care about output, not when you’re online.
  • 22 days PTO – 22 days paid holiday plus 4 paid sick days — no questions asked.
  • WFH equipment budget – One-time budget to get your home office set up with the IT equipment you need from day one.
  • Learning budget – Annual allowance for courses, books, and anything that helps you grow.
  • Real ownership – At 100 people, your work has direct impact. No bureaucracy, no waiting for permission.
  • A team that cares – Genuinely warm, highly productive people who show up for each other as much as for the work.
  • Room to grow – We’re scaling fast. The role you start in today can grow into something much bigger tomorrow.
