Paralegal Contractor

The Ohio Environmental Council seeks a Paralegal Contractor ready to support the OEC Law Center and advocacy teams with administrative functions essential to the success of the OEC’s mission to protect the environment and health of all Ohio communities through legal and policy advocacy, decision-maker accountability, and civic engagement.

As the Paralegal Contractor, you will provide critical support to the OEC’s attorneys and policy advocates, including preparing filings, submitting testimony, organizing case documents, and drafting communications.

The Paralegal Contractor can expect up to twenty hours of work each week, directly coordinating their work with the OEC’s General Counsel. The OEC will pay $30 per hour.

Job Responsibilities

Finalize and submit filings for OEC attorneys for state and federal courts, as well as administrative venues like the Ohio Power Siting Board and Public Utilities Commission of Ohio
Organize case files and other digital documents
Draft legal correspondence
Develop case management systems for the OEC Law Center
Review dockets relevant to the OEC’s work and provide case updates and summaries
Proofread filings and other documents for grammar, style, and citations

Qualifications

Preferred experience of at least three years working as a paralegal or other administrative role supporting attorneys in a litigation setting
Mastery of word processing and other related software, including Microsoft Office products and Google Suite
A competent understanding of legal filing systems and how to independently navigate them
Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously
Consistent time management, especially the ability to meet legal filing deadlines
A spirit of creativity and a willingness to develop solutions to the OEC Law Center’s project management needs
One to two years of proofreading and editing experience, especially in a legal setting

Compensation and benefits

This contract pays 30 per hour for up to twenty hours per week. As an independent contractor, you will be responsible for setting your own hours and schedule to complete the tasks assigned by the OEC Law Center. The full terms of the contract with the OEC will be outlined in the agreement signed between the selected contractor and the OEC.

Additional details

Ideal candidates live in Columbus/Central Ohio, but we will consider remote candidates as well.
