Job Summary: Under the supervision of the chief deputy clerk, the district court clerks are responsible for scheduling court events; generating and mailing notices; preparing and distributing daily court calendars; data entry for both criminal and civil case files and tickets; notating and updating files; entering dispositions and other court actions; processing and filing papers and documents; dealing with the public by telephone and tending the counter which includes cashier responsibilities, processing documents, and other tasks assigned.

General Requirements: This position requires sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting. A working knowledge and facility with word-processing, spreadsheet, and database programs, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat software products, and an ability to learn specialized programs such as the JIS system is very important. Attention to detail and ability to learn and follow procedures for processing various types of files and records is crucial. Must have the ability to read and understand printed materials and electronic formats, and possess sufficient hearing and verbal skills to communicate in person and over the telephone. Education & Experience: High School Diploma or GED is required. An associate’s degree or its equivalent is a plus. Previous experience or training in customer service and/or office settings is important, and prior work-related experience in a court system, law office, bank, government office, or similar settings is highly desirable. Ability to type at least 40 wpm and experience with standard record keeping and filing systems is preferred. An ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, establish priorities, and work independently is necessary in this position. Must be able to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and must be able to deal effectively and professionally with the public in handling difficult situations. Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, and be able to strictly maintain confidential information. Criminal history and Secretary of State record checks may be conducted, and applicants must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
