Job Summary

NOTE: This recruitment will be used to fill an extra help (no benefits) position. The initial work schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with some flexibility. Adjustments may be made to optimize coverage during peak traffic periods. This position is grant funded through 2026. Continuation of employment contingent upon extension of grant funding.

The position allocated to this class is a temporary, grant-funded position (pilot project). The incumbent is responsible for providing individuals arriving at the courthouse with information on various legal proceedings, guidance about the court process, directions/ locations, etc. Duties include providing visitors with immediate and direct assistance/customer service and a sense of familiarity with the Courthouse building(s) and locations. In addition to serving as an in-person resource, the incumbent will develop and maintain court navigation resources, tools, process guides, etc. to inform and educate the public.

Examples of Duties

Serves as the first point of contact for courthouse visitors, establishing a routine presence and resource within the main lobby of various Spokane County court locations, depending upon need and court activities.
Seeks to understand courthouse visitor request(s), responding clearly, professionally, and respectfully on a consistent basis.
Assists in identifying, directing and/or connecting visitors with the justice system offices they are seeking, including but not limited to, the Public Defender’s Office, the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the Office of Pretrial Services, District Court Probation, law enforcement, etc.
Provides specific directions to reach desired location (e.g. courtrooms, offices, departments, etc.) efficiently; accompanies individuals to desired locations as needed.
Answers questions and provides basic procedural information on how cases proceed through the court system, expectations, timelines, etc. with strict adherence to avoiding legal advice, in many of the more common legal matters.
Based on needs and/or request(s), provides formal connection/introduction to the Spokane County court system and/or other community resources that will support visitor needs and successive court appearance(s).
Maintains a record of services provided and commonly asked questions; reports collected data to various criminal justice stakeholders to address system issues and develop innovative solutions to barriers.
Provides ongoing training and consultation about navigator services.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Six (6) months of experience working with the public.
Coursework or training in Social Work, Psychology, Criminal Justice or a related field may substitute for the experience requirement.
