VBM is looking for an experienced Civil Paralegal to join our team. This is a remote position for those located in either MO, IL or KS.
A civil paralegal is a skilled legal professional who assists lawyers in preparing for civil cases and managing legal matters within the civil justice system. They conduct legal research, draft legal documents such as pleadings and motions, organize case files, and assist in trial preparation. Civil paralegals often specialize in areas such as personal injury, employment law, contract disputes, or real estate. They play a vital role in supporting attorneys, conducting factual investigations, communicating with clients and opposing parties, and ensuring that legal proceedings are conducted efficiently and ethically. With their knowledge of legal procedures and attention to detail, civil paralegals contribute significantly to the success of civil law practices.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Case Management: Assist attorneys in managing civil cases from inception to resolution. This includes organizing and maintaining case files, tracking deadlines, and ensuring all relevant documents are filed accurately and on time.
- Legal Research: Conduct comprehensive legal research on statutes, regulations, case law, and other relevant legal authorities related to civil matters. Analyze research findings and prepare summaries for attorney review.
- Drafting Legal Documents: Prepare, draft, and format a wide range of legal documents used in civil litigation, such as complaints, answers, motions, briefs, subpoenas, and settlement agreements. Ensure accuracy and compliance with court rules and procedures.
- Discovery Management: Assist in the discovery process by gathering, organizing, and reviewing documents, preparing discovery requests and responses, and coordinating document production and exchange with opposing parties.
- Witness Coordination: Coordinate witness interviews, prepare witness lists, and assist attorneys in preparing witnesses for deposition or trial testimony. Schedule and coordinate deposition dates and logistics.
- Trial Preparation: Assist attorneys in trial preparation activities, including preparing trial exhibits, organizing trial binders, drafting voir dire questions, and assisting with jury selection.
- Court Filings and Proceedings: Prepare and file legal documents with courts and administrative agencies, ensuring compliance with filing requirements and deadlines. Attend court hearings, trials, and other proceedings to provide assistance to attorneys as needed.
- Client Communication: Communicate with clients to provide case updates, relay messages from attorneys, and assist with document requests or other inquiries. Maintain professional and responsive communication at all times.
- Billing and Administrative Tasks: Assist with billing tasks, such as timekeeping, preparing invoices, and tracking expenses. Handle administrative duties such as managing calendars, scheduling meetings, and coordinating travel arrangements for attorneys.
- Document Management: Organize and maintain electronic and physical document repositories, ensuring documents are properly categorized, indexed, and archived for easy retrieval.
- Team Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with attorneys, other paralegals, legal assistants, and support staff to ensure efficient case management and workflow coordination. Communicate updates and share information to facilitate teamwork.
- Compliance and Ethics: Adhere to ethical guidelines and confidentiality requirements applicable to the legal profession. Maintain the confidentiality of client information and sensitive legal matters.
- Continuing Education: Stay abreast of changes in civil procedure, court rules, and legal technology tools relevant to the practice area. Participate in continuing education and professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Education and Qualifications:
- A professional degree in paralegal studies or related field or equivalent professional experience
