The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County is a nonprofit charitable law firm dedicated to ensuring equal access to the justice system for the low-income, disadvantaged and traditionally underserved residents of Palm Beach County. We are seeking a highly motivated paralegal for our Family Law Project, which assists low-income individuals with family law matters pertaining to initial filings of dissolution of marriage which include issues of: equitable distribution, timesharing with minor children, parenting plans, alimony and child support. We also assist with paternity matters including issues of timesharing, parenting plans, and child support.
JOB SUMMARY:
Researches law, investigates facts, and prepares documents under the direct supervision of the unit attorney. Paralegals work is continually monitored and evaluated by the unit attorney, and they receive annual written evaluations from the supervising attorney. Work schedule is as follows: generally, Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with occasional evening or weekend work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Researches and analyzes law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, and legal codes.
Prepares legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, appeals, letters, memos, forms and similar documents, for review, approval and use by the attorney.
Conducts interviews of clients at the main office and outreach offices as necessary.
Investigates facts and law of case to determine cause of action and to prepare case accordingly.
Files pleadings with court clerk.
Prepares affidavits of documents and maintains document file.
Assists in the training and supervision of other staff, interns and volunteers.
Types, proofreads, revises, files, and retrieves filed materials as required by the office.
Compiles statistics.
Makes and receives telephone calls and makes appointments for designated staff members.
Copies and collates.
Maintains court and office calendars.
Opens and closes cases and assembles office forms.
Performs such clerical and secretarial duties and prepares such reports and statistics as are logically or customarily related to the foregoing or are reasonably required for the operation of the office.
Attends staff and other meetings in the community as assigned.
Maintains confidentiality of all information handled.
Complies with all agency policies and procedures.
Works with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
Must work the days and hours to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks, and be punctual and timely in meeting all performance requirements, including but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines.
Must maintain courteous, professional and effective working relationships with employees and clients of the organization.
Assists the Executive Director and/or supervisor with special projects, assignments and any additional duties as deemed appropriate or as needed.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Associate’s Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or paralegal school; or two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Computer literate; knowledge of WordPerfect.
Typing speed testing at 55 wpm.
Proficiency in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Good judgment, organization, and efficiency.
Capacity to learn and adapt.
Dependability, initiative, motivation, and concern for interest of clients.
Ability to work well with others.
Strong, positive interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and responsibly.
High ethical standards.
Bilingual preferred.
SALARY: Salary range depending on experience. Full benefits package in addition to salary includes:
Vacation leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment) and increases to 3 weeks a year after two years of employment.
Sick leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment).
13-15 paid holidays per year (depending on court schedule).
