About Morledge Law Firm:
Morledge Law Firm is a dedicated criminal defense practice that fights for individuals facing serious charges and life-changing legal situations. We believe in strong advocacy, fairness, and second chances. Our team includes four attorneys, several law clerks (current law students), and two additional paralegals/legal assistants who collaborate to provide the highest level of service to our clients.
About the Role:
This is a hybrid position combining legal assistant and paralegal responsibilities, with a major emphasis on answering and managing phone calls. You may be the first voice people hear when they call our office—so professionalism, patience, and clear communication are key. You’ll also provide legal support through document prep, discovery management, scheduling, and general case assistance.
The person hired for this position will primarily support one of our attorneys who handles felony criminal cases. However, the entire staff occasionally assists the firm’s owner, Birc Morledge, so this position will also assist him as needed. If Mr. Morledge requests assistance, we expect the same “whatever it takes” mindset to apply.
This position involves exposure to some extreme subject matter due to the nature of our work. But, for the right person, that’s part of what will make this job exciting. If you have an interest in true crime or criminal justice, you’ll likely find this work fascinating and rewarding. Every case tells a story—and being part of this process can be an incredibly compelling experience.
Key Responsibilities:
· Answer and manage incoming phone calls and client inquiries
· Schedule court dates, appointments, meetings, and deadlines
· Draft and file legal documents, letters, and case summaries
· Organize discovery materials, police reports, and case files
· Maintain digital and physical files; update firm calendar
· Communicate professionally with clients, court staff, and other legal professionals
· Assist attorneys with trial preparation and document organization
· Collaborate with other legal assistants, paralegals, clerks, and staff to complete tasks and solve problems
· Occasionally assist the firm’s owner with assignments as needed
Qualifications:
· Prior experience in a law office or criminal law related position is preferred, but not required
· Strong verbal and written communication skills
· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
· Comfortable handling a high volume of phone calls
· Able to maintain confidentiality and manage shifting priorities
· Paralegal certification is helpful but not required as this is a legal assistant position
This role is ideal for someone who:
· Is patient and can stay calm while working with high-needs or difficult clients
· Is quick on their feet—clever, resourceful, and able to problem-solve under pressure
· Thrives in a team-oriented environment and enjoys working collaboratively
· Takes initiative and embraces the mindset of “whatever it takes” to get the job done
· Wants to grow their knowledge and skills in law or the criminal justice field while making a real impact
