The Office of the Senior Vice President & General Counsel of Johns Hopkins University seeks applications to fill a position of Associate General Counsel (Compliance) and Deputy Chief Compliance Officer which will be generally responsible for assisting the University’s Chief Compliance Officer and Senior Associate General Counsel with overseeing and managing the University’s compliance function and compliance risk management and will focus primarily on (1) advising the university on a wide range of compliance matters, (2) leading the development and review of university policies, and (3) overseeing the university’s compliance and ethics hotline.
The Office of the Senior Vice President & General Counsel provides legal counsel and representation to Johns Hopkins University and all its schools, divisions, affiliates, and related entities. The office serves the legal needs of university trustees, officers, deans, directors, faculty, and staff in their official capacities. The office also is responsible for hiring and managing all outside counsel to represent the university and its units.
The Associate General Counsel and Deputy Chief Compliance Officer will report to the Senior Vice President & General Counsel, and will work as part of a team led by the Senior Associate General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer. The Associate General Counsel and Deputy Chief Compliance Officer will provide legal advice on a full range of federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and advise on university policies and procedures. The Associate General Counsel and Deputy Chief Compliance Officer, under the supervision of the Senior Associate General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, will also lead two key aspects of the university’s compliance function: (1) the cross-institution team of officials that review, revise, and shepherd university policies through the leadership approval process; and (2) management of the compliance hotline, which serves as a critical reporting resource for constituents across the institution.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Advise the university on legal issues related to a wide range of compliance matters.
Work with senior university and divisional staff, including representatives from the Provost’s Office, Finance and Administration, General Counsel’s Office, and divisional deans’ offices to initiate, develop, review, revise and manage all university policies.
Oversee and manage the operation of the university’s compliance hotline, including supervising the dissemination of reports to the appropriate officials as deemed necessary. Ensures tracking, investigation, and resolution of such reports.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Law Degree from an accredited institution.
At least 6 years of experience as a legal professional.
Must be licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction and in good standing.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience providing legal counsel to an institution of higher education, and one associated with an academic medical center in particular, is strongly preferred.
Experience with providing legal counsel on compliance matters is strongly preferred.
Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently in a highly complex organization.
Superb professional judgment and high ethical standards.
Attention to detail and ability to manage a high volume of work and multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work with senior university leadership, including executives and faculty leadership.
A strong sense of humor.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate’s geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
