Benefits to You
We pay 95% to 99% of medical insurance premiums for full-time employees, including mental health coverage. The salary range, identified in the job announcement, is for a new hire who is not yet a member of the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). After becoming a member of PERS (usually after six full calendar months of employment), the required 6% employee retirement contribution will be deducted from your pay, and your salary will be increased by 6.95% to help offset that and other cost increases (such as Medicare, Social Security, state taxes, and federal taxes). For new hires who are already active PERS members, the 6% salary deduction and 6.95% salary increase will be effective immediately upon hire.
In this job profile, we offer candidates new to OJD up to the second step of the salary range, depending on experience. You are potentially eligible for a 5% annual increase.
10 paid holidays, 2 floating holidays, 3 personal business days, separate sick and vacation paid leaves (prorated for part-time employees), and other employee benefits such as optional insurances and flexible spending plans.
OJD will pay you a 5% allowance for bilingual skills (includes ASL) if you can pass a skills test and are assigned to use those skills on the job.
Position Highlights
The
Marion County Circuit Court
in Salem, Oregon, is hiring a Courtroom Clerk (Court Operations Specialist) for the Honorable James C. Edmonds.
Much of your day will be spent in the courtroom, where you will provide clerical support to the judge and judicial assistant. You will update calendars, monitor cases, process exhibits, operate the recording equipment, and maintain accurate logs of court proceedings. You will perform real-time data entry during trials and hearings, filling out forms and preparing notices, orders, and other legal documents. You will also ensure the security of the courtroom.
When not in the courtroom, you will provide administrative support in partnership with other court staff. You will initiate and maintain a variety of files, records, and monitoring systems related to the disposition of cases, proposed orders, correspondence, and conferences. You will process mail, screen calls, greet visitors, answer routine questions, and coordinate case activities with judges, court staff, attorneys, and litigants. You will also prepare lists, statistics, and reports related to caseloads.
Assigned tasks may be changed to accommodate workload and organizational needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Four (4) years of responsible administrative experience in a moderately complex office or business setting demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for this position.

Experience performing a variety of clerical or administrative support tasks in a business, professional, or legal environment with strict deadlines that include reviewing documents for accuracy, content, and grammar.
Experience using a variety of software programs to access and input information and complete various tasks.
Experience coordinating schedules and maintaining calendars.
Experience demonstrating tact and diplomacy when providing customer service in a court or legal environment to a variety of individuals who are facing challenging life circumstances and stressful situations.
Experience identifying and safeguarding confidential information and materials that must be accessed and managed via an electronic case management system.
Working Conditions
This is a full-time position, and the work schedule currently is 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for hours worked in excess of 40 per workweek.
Occasional after-hours or overtime work may be required.
This position is not eligible for hybrid or remote work.
This position works in a high-volume office with many interruptions.
Daily interaction with defendants, self-represented litigants, and attorneys.
Frequent phone and in-person contact with people from diverse backgrounds.
Frequent phone and in-person contact with people who may be facing challenging life circumstances, highly stressful situations, or trauma.
Long periods of sitting or standing at a computer may be required.
Regular use of the following equipment: electronic recording equipment, telephone, OJD-assigned computer with multiple monitors, copy machine, fax machine, and scanner.
