Position: *Deputy Sheriff – Patrol

Starting salary: $67,728.13/yr – $70,437.12/yr with 4+ years of full-time law enforcement officer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Protect life, property, and enforce laws and regulations.
  • Use computer systems and electronic equipment, handle personal danger, and contact the public under routine and emergency conditions.
  • Engage in pursuit, apprehension, and arrest of law violators, suspected law violators, or when assistance is requested from dispatch or other deputy sheriffs.
  • Provide police omnipresence through routine patrol, conduct residential and business security surveys, and provide security tips.
  • Drive or walk within residential or business areas to conduct routine patrol, surveillance, and investigative functions; maintain constant engagement with the police radio for all transmissions.
  • Back up other law enforcement officers and request backup assistance as necessary.
  • Communicate with dispatchers regularly by phone, computer/MDT or radio.
  • Respond to calls for assistance or to determine if a crime has occurred.
  • Investigate violations of Florida State Statutes, County Ordinances, and civil/criminal traffic infractions; may investigate violations of Federal Statutes.
  • Interview complainants, suspects, witnesses, and victims.
  • Arrest, search, and transport violators and/or prisoners.
  • Conduct searches outdoors (cars, houses, buildings, etc.).
  • Protect, secure, and process crime scenes; establish a perimeter to contain a suspect when necessary.
  • Evaluate tactical needs on every call for service.
  • Recover stolen property, perform field sobriety tests, conduct felony stops, assist other units with special details as necessary, conduct post-crime follow-up investigations, deliver and serve warrants.
  • Perform routine traffic stops and direct traffic when necessary; intervene in domestic disputes; respond to non-law enforcement related calls for service/assistance; counsel parties involved in crisis; investigate missing person’s cases; assist other agencies; communicate important information to concerned citizens; initiate Baker Act procedures; transport persons to facilities; hand deliver civil papers.
  • Complete necessary paperwork: incident reports, field interview reports, arrest affidavits, traffic citations, monthly statistics, administrative paperwork, and alarm notifications; maintain confidentiality of sensitive information; operate a computer/MDT for word processing, database access, and electronic filing.
  • Initiate citizen contacts, assist motorists and pedestrians, refer the public to appropriate agencies, and participate in special events and programs such as Neighborhood Watch or community policing.
  • Review reports and depositions in preparation for subpoenas or hearings; communicate with the Assistant State Attorney as necessary; testify at depositions, hearings, and other court proceedings.
  • Maintain all required certifications and trainings (firearms, first aid/CPR, Law Enforcement Vehicle Operations, physical exams, FDLE courses); stay abreast of policy, procedure, and statutory changes; maintain physical fitness level.
  • Maintain weapons, uniforms, equipment according to policy; attend vehicle maintenance and inventories.
  • Understand standard equipment required while on the job, including radio, computers, vehicle, telephone, ASP baton, handgun, shotgun, chemical agents, ECD, gas mask, PPE gear, riot helmet, first aid kit, CPR kit, fingerprint kit, fire extinguisher, leather gear, body armor, vest, flashlight, handcuffs, uniforms, and body-worn camera.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, journals, technical procedures, and regulations.
  • Write reports and business correspondence.
  • Present information and respond to questions from managers, employees, agencies, tourists, business partners, and the public.
  • Communicate verbally and nonverbally; public speaking ability for diverse groups.
  • Build and maintain working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represent the Orange County Sheriff’s Office positively.
  • Collaborate with other units inside and outside the agency.
  • Know resources available from other law enforcement agencies.
  • Use audio-visual equipment.
  • Organize and manage multiple assignments, prioritize information, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Compute rates, ratios, percentages, and read numeric orders.
  • Basic computer skills: word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, databases.
  • Maintain electronic files and use the internet for research.
  • Understand current laws, investigative procedures, and policies of the OCSO, warrants, and enforcement of county ordinances, traffic and criminal laws.
