Position Overview

The Deputy Public Defender III position provides legal services to adult defendants in criminal cases, or minors charged with criminal offenses in the Juvenile Court.

Future Salary Increase

June 2026 – 3.65% increase to base pay (3.0% Across-the-Board + .65% Market Adjustment)

June 2027 – 3.65% increase to base pay (3.0% Across-the-Board + .65% Market Adjustment)

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the area of criminal law, be able to communicate effectively, hold self and others accountable, demonstrate ethical behavior, drive to excel, maximize team effectiveness, support change, and stay current with new technology and trends in their profession.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One (1) year of experience as a Deputy Public Defender II in the San Diego County Public Defender’s Office.
  • One (1) year of experience as an attorney at an equivalent level with another California county or city, state or federal agency.
  • Three (3) years of experience as an attorney at an equivalent level in the practice of criminal and/or civil law.
  • Hiring Process and Timeline

    Interviews will be held the week of July 13, 2026. Job offers will be made the week of July 27, 2026. This is a series recruitment that will close on June 14, 2026.

    Condition of Employment

    Prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre‑employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.

    Evaluation

    Qualified candidates will be placed on a six‑month employment list based on evaluation scores. Application information will be reviewed by an automated evaluation system; successful applicants will receive individual confirmation.
