Job Summary
Provides for the enforcement of court orders on behalf of San Marcos Municipal Court of Record; serves/summons and subpoenas; provides courtroom security for all open court proceedings; provides building and security screening for the San Marcos Municipal Court facility; assists with the Court’s Warrant Enforcement Program by locating, contacting, and if required, arresting wanted persons. Performs other duties as assigned. The Deputy Marshal/Court Bailiff reports to and works under the direct supervision of the Sergeant.
Essential
Functions
Performs security duties at all open court proceedings and office operations as scheduled.
Serves summons, subpoenas, and/or other legal documents issued by the Court.
Warrant Enforcement Program:
Research warrants issued by the Municipal Court:
Utilizes third-party contacts to locate defendants.
Sends out warrant letters to defendants.
Contact wanted individuals via:
Phone calls, personal contacts, or volunteer efforts.
Written contact methods such as door hangers, mail, email, social media.
Field contacts at homes, workplaces, schools, or other locations.
Prepare monthly summaries regarding case closure and revenue generated.
Initiate arrests of wanted individuals as necessary.
Decision Making
Make decisions and take appropriate actions in emergency situations.
Handle citizen and defendant contacts appropriately.
Understand and follow written and verbal instructions, department policies, rules, and regulations.
Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent.
TCOLE Basic Peace Officer Certification or higher.
Three years of honorable service with a Law Enforcement agency.
Valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
Complete Court Security Training approved by T.C.O.L.E within 1 year of employment.
Job Dimensions
Read and understand State and municipal codes, court policies, legal documents, and arrest procedures.
Possess effective verbal, written, and de-escalation skills.
Maintain positive working relationships with court personnel, other City departments, agencies, media, and the public.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Includes lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally; constant vision, hearing, talking; frequent standing, walking, handling; occasional sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, dexterity, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, foot controls; occasional running.
Work involves exposure to potentially hostile or violent individuals.
This is a Safety Sensitive Position.
