General Purpose
Provides technical assistance to the City’s attorneys and performs preparatory functions in order to help insure the efficient
operation of the office and allow for the most appropriate use of the attorneys’ time.
Union Affiliation: Non-Union
Pay Grade 15: $27.70 – $30.87 Hourly
Remote Tier 3: Up to Two (2) days remote/week
Essential Job Functions
• Assists attorneys in preparation of legal documents, administrative hearings cases, court cases, and legal opinions.
Serves as Clerk for Burlington Housing Board of Review
Reviews and responds to parking ticket appeals submitted online or through written correspondence. Reviews
requests for payment agreements and drafts payment plans. Tracks outcome of appeals made through written
correspondence. Assists in drafting documents related to ticket cases appealed to court, including tracking cases
appealed to court. Responds to inquiries related to parking tickets.
Reviews and drafts resolutions, regulations and ordinances.
Interviews various parties to a case or issue.
Researches legal issues to find supportive arguments, case documentation, and law library reference. Evaluates,
selects, and compiles legal opinions, documents, and synopses of statutes.
Researches title issues. Assists in preparation of various types of deeds.
Interprets assembled information, makes determinations, recommends legal action to be pursed, and formulates
arguments.
Drafts briefs for cases in litigations, legal memoranda, motions to deny or amend, legal opinions, instructions for the
charging of juries, and proposed legislation.
Prepares reports of findings and recommends remedial action.
Prepares and ensures proper serving or distribution of legal forms and post case papers.
Conducts correspondence with other law offices and the public on legal cases and issues.
Presents testimony at legal or administrative hearings. May authorize payment of cost involved in court cases and
issues.
Maintains and notifies attorneys of cases status and court schedule.
Work is performed in office and field settings. Some travel may be required for which incumbents should have private
means of transportation available. Some evening or overtime work may be required.

Qualifications / Basic Job Requirements

Additional experience may be substituted for a degree requirement on a two-for-one year basis.
High School diploma or equivalent.
Four years’ experience at or above a senior clerical or technical level, including one year in investigatory, analytical,
research, or paralegal duties.
Thirty college credits in legal or paralegal studies may be substituted for all but the one year of specialized experience.
College training may be substituted for the general experience on a semester for six months basis.
Working knowledge of legal procedures, principles, methods, and terminology required in the practice of law to perform
legal research.
Working knowledge of appellate court practices and procedures.
Working knowledge of commonly used legal terms and documents.
Ability to do title work.
Ability to work independently
Ability to exercise sound judgement and discretion.
Ability to make valid conclusions and recommendations.
Ability to Interview effectively with tact and discretion.
Considerable knowledge of legal procedures, principles, methods, and terminology used in Vermont courts.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associated, clients, court officials, attorneys, and
the public.
Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.
