Deputy Court Clerk – County Clerk Legal Division Jobs in Howell, MI at Livingston County
General Summary
Under the direction of the District Court Judge, utilizes electronic recording equipment to record proceedings. Prepares official transcripts of proceedings in accordance with Court policy. Serves as a secretary to the Judge, includes typing various documents and correspondence, screening calls and visitors, maintaining judicial files and performing related secretarial functions.
Starting pay is dependent on an applicant’s relevant experience.

Essential Functions
Utilizes electronic recording equipment to record District Court proceedings, requests speakers to direct themselves to the microphone, clarify inaudible statements, or to spell technical or unfamiliar terms to ensure an accurate and complete recording.
While recording proceedings, prepares a detailed log of court activity, includes identifying the speaker and noting the point that exhibits are marked, witnesses are called and other actions occur in order to assist in transcript preparation.
Prepares official verbatim transcripts of preliminary examinations, appeals, and other cases as required; Proofreads transcripts, certifies copies, and prepares billings as appropriate, all in accordance with Court policy.
Marks and maintains a record of exhibits and provides other assistance to the Judge in the courtroom.
Maintains files of transcripts, tapes and courtroom notes as required by court rules.
Types correspondence, opinions, order and other legal documents for the Judge.
Receives calls from attorneys, defendants and others regarding transcripts, scheduling matters, court procedures and specific case information, determines which matters need the Judge’s attention and responds to others.
Schedules felony cases for preliminary exams and competency exams. Enter data and uses computer to generate notices for exams.
Prepares quarterly and annual reports for the Judge.
Other Functions:
Adds supplements to law books.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications/Experience
Must be a high school graduate, or equivalent, preferably with advanced legal secretarial training, with coursework in legal terminology.
Two years of secretarial work in a court or legal setting with substantial word processing experience.
Must be certified as an Electronic Court Recorder (CER) by the Michigan Supreme Court within 18 months of employment.
