Legal Advisor to the Commission – Federal Regulatory Affairs
Anticipated Starting Salary Range: $145,000 – $170,000

The Commissioner’s Office of the State Corporation Commission (“Commission” and “SCC”) seeks a Legal Advisor to focus on federal regulations impacting the Commonwealth of Virginia. The selected candidate for this new position will monitor and research key legislation, trends, proposed changes and topics of interest managed by various federal regulatory agencies. This Legal Advisor will build relationships and attend key meetings with federal agencies and will educate and advise the Commissioners on current federal legislative issues for consideration. At the direction of the Commission, the selected candidate for this position will: conduct highly complex research on federal issues; write research reports for the Commission; draft comments for regulatory agencies on behalf of the Commission; serve as a subject matter expert on federal regulatory matters for SCC Division leadership, the SCC’s Office of General Counsel, and others; and perform related work as requested. This position does provide opportunities for some telework.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications for this position include considerable professional experience in regulatory and administrative law; a law degree from an accredited law school; and admission to the Virginia State Bar. Knowledge of the work of the Commission with an understanding of how to research federal legislative decisions, trends and discussions and to provide sound counsel is essential. The ideal candidate for this position will have knowledge of the techniques used to research statues and resolutions; the ability to analyze complex information and communicate effectively to facilitate decision making; and the ability to write well documented yet concise reports. The selected candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both in and outside of the Commission. The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing and will have a professional demeaner.
