Salary increases
:
Salary steps are presented as a range from lowest to highest and are organized into four steps. Advancement from a step occurs after completing one year of service in the current step.
Signing incentive
:
- $7,000 upon beginning work for the Court;
- $5,000 at the first anniversary of employment;
- $4,000 at the second anniversary of employment;
- $4,000 at the third anniversary of employment.
Benefits
The Superior Court offers a comprehensive benefit package, summarized as follows:
- CalPERs Retirement Plan
- Health Benefits through Kaiser, Health Net, and Valley Health Plan. When Kaiser is selected, the Court fully pays medical coverage for the employee and dependents. Dental and vision insurance premiums are also fully covered.
- Holidays and Leave Benefits: 14 paid holidays, 15 days of vacation earned during the first year, 4 days of personal leave, a birthday day off, and sick leave accrued at 100 hours per year.
- Longevity Pay:
After five years of continuous service, the Court provides $175 per pay period, with increases based on additional years of service. - Deferred compensation plans.
- CART Court Reporting Certification Differential: 5% pay differential for reporters using specialized equipment.
- Lead Pay: 7.5% pay differential.
- Employee Referral Incentive: $1,500 one‑time payment upon successful referral of a new Court Reporter who passes probation.
- Realtime Education Incentive: 20% pay differential for reporters holding a state or national Realtime certification (CRR, CRP, CCRR, CRG, RVR‑M, RVR‑M‑S, or FCRR).
- Typing Premium: 10% pay differential for reporters who have passed the Court‑administered Realtime certification test.
Benefits are prorated for part‑time employees. Extra Help positions are eligible for limited benefits.
Responsibilities
- Attend assigned court sessions and produce verbatim stenographic records of proceedings at high speed.
- Provide immediate read‑back of all or portions of the record upon request.
- Prepare printed or magnetic‑media transcripts of court proceedings.
- Review, certify, and file printed transcripts; provide daily transcripts as needed.
- Process court information and proceedings using real‑time technology.
- Maintain necessary equipment and materials for the transcription of court proceedings, at own expense, in accordance with California Rules of Court, Rule 810.
- Maintain paper and electronic files related to court proceedings.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Certification by the California Department of Consumer Affairs Certified Shorthand Reporters Board is required.
- Realtime reporting is highly desirable; incumbents must hold Realtime certification from the National Court Reporters Association, the Deposition Reporters Association, or have passed a Court‑administered Realtime test.
- Must provide and maintain equipment for transcription.
- Record shorthand at a minimum of 200 words per minute with 97.5% accuracy.
- Plan and organize work to meet deadlines.
- Establish and maintain working relationships with judges, court staff, attorneys, and the public.
- Comprehend and process varying dialects, accents, and speech peculiarities of the English language.
- Communicate appropriately in response to inquiries and requests.
- Work independently and in collaboration with others.
Working Conditions
The work environment is generally clean, inside buildings, with limited exposure to dust, fumes, odors, and noise. Work may occur under demanding circumstances with frequent deadlines and expectation for high‑quality output under limited time constraints.
Essential Functions
- Frequent use of stenographic equipment to record verbatim proceedings.
- Frequent use of electronic equipment to produce transcripts and other documents.
- Read back court proceedings in a clear and concise manner in court or other settings.
Physical Demands
- Prolonged sitting at a keyboard with fine hand coordination and high‑frequency repetitive motion.
- Occasional lifting, pushing, or carrying of objects up to 15 pounds.
- Walking, bending, stooping, and squatting as required.
