Position Description

The Seattle Municipal Court’s (SMC) mission is to provide a forum for people to resolve alleged violations of the law in a respectful, independent, and impartial manner. The Court is dedicated to advancing social justice issues by supporting personal, structural, and systemic change in our community, and building a diverse workforce. The Court works collaboratively to realize the City’s vision of racial equity by participating in the City of Seattle’s Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI). SMC is a highly innovative and progressive court with a community-based approach to judicial administration.

The Infractions Division is a unit of Court Operations. The Administration team consists of 6-8 people who process transfers of ownership/responsibility for parking and traffic camera tickets, proof of insurance, deferrals, community service plans, collections disputes, and other mostly non-public-facing tasks associated with traffic, non-traffic, traffic camera, and parking citations.

The Infractions Administration Team is currently accepting applications from qualified candidates for a half-time Administrative Specialist II position. Candidates with the ability to effectively work with multi-cultural communities, who are committed to providing high quality service to all people, are encouraged to apply.

You will be best prepared for this position if you have experience in the following:

Court employment
Updating and navigating database systems and accurately entering data.
MS Outlook, SharePoint, Word, and Excel; with the ability to type at least 35 WPM

Job Responsibilities

Use Court and Department of Licensing records to investigate and respond to disputes regarding the vehicle ownership and responsibility of payment of debts to the Court
Update Court records regarding vehicle ownership and responsibility for unpaid parking and traffic camera citations, including rental car citations
Research Court records to verify debts and respond to collection agency requests to research accounts of Court debtors
Verify driving records for infraction deferral agreements and clear or reinstate deferred charges accordingly
Set up and monitor community service schedules with defendants for parking and traffic violations, and respond to phone, in-person, and mail and e-mail inquiries
Respond to attorney emails, letters, and in-person requests for forms and documents during the court process. Record receipt of motions and notices of appearance and issue subpoenas for infraction cases
Process infraction prehearing waivers and schedule the cases for contested hearings
Maintain the Court’s paper and electronic files of citations and correspondence
Perform general clerical support tasks such as completing reports, scanning, photocopying, cataloging, filing, and archiving court documents
Order and stock office supplies
Assist in training and actively participate in meetings/events
Look for opportunities to improve efficiency and quality of work processes and services

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
2+ years of clerical support experience. Working in environments of discretion and maintain confidentiality. Court experience preferred.
OR
A Combination of education, training and/or experience which provides evidence of the ability to perform work of the class.

Additional Information

Work Environment

This position will primarily be onsite at the Seattle Justice enter at 600 5th Ave, Seattle. Hybrid work will be based on operational needs. As a half-time position, work may be divided into five 4-hour days or a combination of 8-hour and 4-hour days totaling 20 hours weekly. Work arrangements will be based on operational needs and are subject to change.

PAY

This position is part of the 5-Step Compensation program. Full salary range for this position is $35.61 (Step 2) – $39.87 (Step 5). To ensure internal equity, the expected starting salary is, Step 2 – $35.61.

A job offer is contingent upon successfully passing the court’s background check. The background check includes a criminal history background review, fingerprinting and reference checks.

This is a half-time position, working 20 hours per week; it is Civil Service and non-exempt from overtime.

New employees are required to pass a 12-month probation period.

This position is represented by the Teamsters Local 763 union.
