Assistant Public Defender I

Starting Salary: $72,250.22 – $79,502.28 per year (Commensurate with education and experience)

Basic Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm (Full time)

Location: Bloomington, IL

Are you passionate about criminal defense and ready to stand up for the constitutional rights of all individuals—regardless of income? The McLean County Public Defender’s Office is seeking a dedicated and driven attorney to join our team and make a real impact in the courtroom and the community.

This is an entry-level opportunity for licensed attorneys with a strong sense of justice and a desire to represent clients facing traffic and DUI charges. Preference will be given to experienced applicants, but we also welcome:

Recent law grads awaiting bar results
711 licensed law students
Third-year law students

What You’ll Do

Represent indigent clients in court on traffic and DUI cases
Draft motions and legal documents
Conduct legal research and case preparation
Develop trial strategies and appear in court regularly
Communicate effectively with clients, courts, and legal peers
Help shape a more equitable justice system, one case at a time

What We’re Looking For

A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
0–1 year of legal experience (public defense experience a plus)
Active Illinois law license, or eligibility for licensure
Sharp analytical, writing, and communication skills
A deep commitment to justice and empathy for underserved clients
The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
