Overview:
Bellefleur Estate Law, PLLC provides practical and compassionate legal guidance in estate planning, probate, trust administration, and related matters.
Bellefleur Estate Law, PLLC seeks a Contract Paralegal to perform substantive billable legal work under the direction of one or more attorneys in the firm. This Contract Paralegal’s primary goal is to support our legal team with legal research, drafting memos, discovery requests and responses, motions, and orders, and preparing for hearings and trials.
Due to the size of the firm, the Contract Paralegal will also be expected to complete administrative tasks, including mailing, file organization, proofreading, court filings, calendar management and client communications.
Reporting Relationship:
Paralegals perform their duties under the direction of the one or more attorneys to whom they may be assigned. Paralegals’ employment or contractual relationship with the Firm is managed by the Firm Administrator/Owner.
This Paralegal is an independent contract position for the first six months. After an evaluation, the Contract Paralegal may be offered full-time employment thereafter.
The Contract Paralegal will generally determine the manner and means of performing assigned work, subject to applicable deadlines, client needs, court requirements, firm procedures, and attorney direction regarding substantive legal work.
The Contract Paralegal is responsible for maintaining any equipment, business licenses, insurance, and tax obligations required for the Paralegal’s independent business, unless otherwise agreed in writing.
The Contract Paralegal may not provide legal advice, establish an attorney-client relationship, or make substantive legal decisions on behalf of the Firm or its clients. All legal work remains subject to attorney supervision and review as appropriate.
Responsibilities:
1. Client intake
2. Organizing files
3. Docketing/scheduling events and arranging conferences and meetings
4. Filling out legal forms and assisting clients with filling out forms
5. Drafting letters and simple court documents for attorney review
6. Writing reports and legal documents for attorney review
7. Thorough legal research into new and novel issues, verifying case law, and reviewing legislation
8. Preparing discovery and responses to discovery demands
9. Meeting with clients to review discovery responses
10. Communicating with clients with updates and gathering information
11. Helping attorneys prepare cases for filings, hearings, and mediation
12. Assisting lawyers in the courtroom
13. Legal Assistant tasks, including but not limited to: court filings, updating files, answering phones, scheduling, proofreading.
14. Occasional in-person signing appointments and other meetings with team and clients
Education & Experience
We value excellent legal work, good judgment, responsiveness, attention to detail, and treating clients with respect during important and often difficult life transitions. This Contract Paralegal should exhibit the following skills and knowledge:
- At least 2 years of law firm experience, a paralegal certificate, or equivalent work experience preferably involving Washington trusts, probates and estate planning.
- Strong attention to detail, writing, proofreading and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines without extensive supervision.
- Comfort communicating directly with clients, fiduciaries, courts, financial institutions, and other professionals.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat or other PDF editors, and cloud-based document management systems (Clio Manage/Clio Grow).
Key Performance Indicators
- 35-40 hours per week of total time per week
- 30-hours per week of productive time is attributed to billable work on behalf of the client (measured quarterly at 390 “billable” hours)
- 90% of tasks are completed on time
Compensation
Compensation will be based on experience and may be structured as an hourly contract rate between $35-$45/hour. The contractor will submit regular invoices reflecting the date, matter, work performed, time spent, and amount charged.
Pay: $35.00 – $45.00 per hour
