Job Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Legal Assistant to support a dynamic legal team within a government-affiliated health agency. This role will directly support senior attorneys on projects involving contract reviews, public records requests, subpoenas, and HIPAA authorizations. The ideal candidate will have prior legal support experience, strong organizational skills, and a solid understanding of confidentiality laws, including HIPAA and public records regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist attorneys with the review of contracts, grants, amendments, and other legal documents.
Review and organize records for release in response to public records requests, medical records inquiries, subpoenas, and media inquiries.
Utilize an automated case management system to streamline and document request handling.
Provide compliance support by interpreting and applying confidentiality and public health-related laws.
Collaborate with internal departments, administrative personnel, and external partners.
Support special legal projects and ad hoc tasks as assigned by attorneys.
Qualifications:
Education:
One of the following is required:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal or Legal Assistant Studies
Paralegal Certificate
Completion of 1 year (28 semester hours) of graduate-level law school
Experience:
At least 1 year of prior legal support experience preferred
Familiarity with HIPAA, the Tennessee Public Records Act, and subpoena processing is highly advantageous
Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication
Exceptional attention to detail and follow-through
Strong organizational and time management skills
Ability to manage confidential information with discretion
Proficient in using legal databases, case management tools, and Microsoft Office Suite
